If you want a lightweight, low-impedance headphone that drives easily from any device for extended studio sessions or casual gaming, choose PreSonus HD5; if you need superior acoustic isolation with a wider frequency range and premium comfort features for critical mixing or noisy environments, choose iCON Pro Audio HP-310.
• PreSonus HD5: The standout strength is its ultra-low 32-ohm impedance which ensures it works perfectly with phones and laptops without an amp, but the trade-off is a standard 15Hz-25kHz range compared to competitors. This pick is best for mobile producers and gamers who prioritize plug-and-play convenience.
• iCON Pro Audio HP-310: Its biggest asset is the massive 140-ohm impedance paired with a 10Hz-30kHz frequency response for deep detail, yet this requires more power to drive effectively on some devices. This model suits audiophiles and mix engineers who demand maximum isolation and extended highs.
The PreSonus HD5 feels like the workhorse of the pair. It is designed around the concept of accessibility. With a 32-ohm impedance, these headphones are engineered to perform flawlessly regardless of what source you are plugging them into. Whether you are connecting directly to a smartphone, a laptop audio interface, or a video game controller, the low impedance means you won't need a dedicated external amplifier to get decent volume levels. This makes it an incredibly versatile tool for someone who moves between different setups frequently.
The physical design leans heavily into practicality for long sessions. The closed-back, over-ear construction provides a secure grip thanks to articulating earcups that adjust to your head shape. The manufacturer notes that the earcups feature "buttery soft" padding intended to reduce fatigue during recording or private listening. If your workflow involves moving around a studio space, the included 10-foot cable offers genuine freedom of movement, preventing the frustration of being tethered to a desk.
However, there are limitations to consider. The frequency range spans from 15Hz to 25kHz. While this covers the vast majority of human hearing and professional audio needs, it does not extend as far into the sub-bass or ultra-high treble as some other models. Additionally, the noise control is passive; there is no active cancellation technology here. You rely entirely on the seal of the earcup to block out the world. If you are looking for the absolute deepest bass extension or the widest possible soundstage in the high frequencies, this might feel slightly conservative. But for general monitoring, gaming, and mobile use, the balance of price-to-performance via the 50mm neodymium drivers is hard to beat.

The iCON Pro Audio HP-310 positions itself differently, aiming for the enthusiast and the critical listener. The most striking difference immediately jumps out in the specifications: this unit boasts a 140-ohm impedance. This is significantly higher than the PreSonus model, meaning it demands more power to drive properly. You will likely need a dedicated headphone amplifier or a robust audio interface to get the full dynamic range out of these, as they may sound thin or quiet when plugged directly into a phone or a low-power laptop jack.
In exchange for that power requirement, you get a much broader frequency response ranging from 10Hz to 30kHz. This extra bandwidth allows for more precise reproduction of very low-frequency rumble and extremely high-frequency air and detail that sits beyond the typical hearing limit. The description highlights a "gradient cavity design" and custom-tuned drivers intended to deliver lifelike sound. The goal here is precision monitoring. If you are mixing vocals or trying to hear subtle artifacts in a track, the extended range and the specific tuning of the 50mm (or 40mm depending on the specific driver text interpretation, though listed as 50mm in key features) drivers offer a clearer picture of the audio spectrum.
Comfort and isolation are also prioritized here. The HP-310 features a self-adjusting headband and upgraded memory foam cushions designed to minimize ear fatigue. The closed-back design is described as providing "superior acoustic sealing," which is crucial for isolating ambient noise in a loud environment or preventing sound leakage during vocal tracking. The cable is even longer at 3 meters (9.8 feet), giving you plenty of room to roam, and it includes a gold-plated 3.5mm plug plus a screw-on 6.35mm adapter for professional gear. This is a tool for someone who treats their listening environment with seriousness and has the equipment to support high-impedance headphones.
• Best for battery life and portability → Neither model uses batteries as they are both wired, but the PreSonus HD5 is better for mobile use because its 32-ohm impedance runs off weak sources like phones without draining them or sounding quiet.
• Best for extreme frequency detail → The iCON Pro Audio HP-310 wins with its 10Hz-30kHz range, capturing details the PreSonus cuts off at 15Hz and 25kHz.
• Best for gaming in noisy rooms → The iCON Pro Audio HP-310 offers superior passive isolation and a tighter seal, making it a strong contender for the title of best noise canceling gaming headphones for workout scenarios where you need to focus, provided you have a powered source.
• Best for home studio flexibility → The PreSonus HD5 is the safer bet if you plan to switch between an audio interface, a tablet, and a PC without buying extra gear.
• Best for long mixing sessions → The iCON Pro Audio HP-310 claims upgraded memory foam and a self-adjusting headband, which suggests better ergonomics for hours of critical listening.
• Best value for casual users → The PreSonus HD5 is likely the smarter financial choice for someone who just wants good sound without needing an amplifier.
• Best for professional monitoring accuracy → The iCON Pro Audio HP-310 targets the pro market with its high sensitivity and wide response curve, ideal for checking mixes in detail.
• Best cable length → Both offer generous lengths, but the iCON Pro Audio HP-310 edges out with a 3-meter cable versus the PreSonus 10-foot (approx. 3-meter) cable, though the PreSonus includes a 1/4-inch adapter while iCON includes a screw-on one.
I would buy the PreSonus HD5 for my daily setup unless I specifically needed to check for ultra-high frequency artifacts in a mix. The ease of use with 32-ohm impedance removes the friction of needing an amp, and the 10-foot cable is perfect for navigating a home studio. However, if I were setting up a dedicated listening station for a serious workout or a quiet mixing session where isolation was paramount, I would opt for the iCON Pro Audio HP-310. The extended frequency range and superior build materials make it the better choice for a headset for workout sessions where you need to block out the gym noise and hear every detail of your playlist. Ultimately, the PreSonus HD5 is the practical winner for versatility, while the iCON HP-310 is the specialist's choice for fidelity.
Both models are wired and over-ear, so they can be used for workouts, but the iCON Pro Audio HP-310's superior isolation and comfort features make it slightly better suited for noisy environments, while the PreSonus HD5 is lighter and easier to drive from a phone.
Yes, because the iCON Pro Audio HP-310 has a 140-ohm impedance, it requires more power to reach optimal volume and sound quality compared to the 32-ohm PreSonus HD5, which works fine with standard devices.
The iCON Pro Audio HP-310 is marketed with "elite closed-back isolation" and a gradient cavity design intended to block more ambient noise than the standard passive isolation of the PreSonus HD5.
You can connect both to a smartphone via the 3.5mm jack, but the PreSonus HD5 will sound louder and fuller due to its low 32-ohm impedance, whereas the iCON HP-310 might sound quieter without an external amp.
