"Symmetry '25: A Mathematics Festival at Presidency University "
Presidency University, Kolkata, successfully hosted its annual mathematics festival, Symmetry '25, on September 19, 2025. This flagship event drew nearly 260 participants (students, faculty, and scholars) for a vibrant celebration of mathematics, creativity, and collaboration.
The festival commenced with an inspiring inaugural address by Professor Avishek Adhikari, emphasizing that a strong foundation in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science is essential for excelling in the age of AI and technology.
Distinguished Lectures:
Symmetry '25 bridged theory and application with lectures from eminent scholars:
Pure Math: Professor Neena Gupta (ISI Kolkata), renowned for her work on the Zariski Cancellation Problem, spoke on the beauty and intellectual rigor of abstract mathematical structures.
Applied Math: Professor Koel Das (IISER Kolkata) demonstrated the practical relevance of mathematical concepts in computational sciences and real-world systems.
The festival featured a diverse mix of events that tested logic, creativity, and teamwork:
Online Events: Included Meme-otopy (humor and math), Symmetry of Shadows (photography), and the creative writing contest, Math-o-Quill.
Offline Events: Featured logic puzzles like Crack the Grid, the intellectually charged Inquisition quiz (won by an ISI team), and the Paper Presentation, which showcased young research aptitude.
The event's success was a testament to the seamless collaboration and organizational skills of the faculty and student volunteers. Symmetry '25 concluded as a memorable collective achievement, reinforcing the university's legacy of nurturing curiosity, innovation, and community in mathematics.
