Preserve Murray
Working to preserve our rich architectural heritage for the future.
Murray First Ward/Mount Vernon Academy
This building, built in 1907, was designed by Niels Edward Liljenburg in a medieval or English parish Gothic style. The square tower is a hallmark of this type of architecture. This particular building has three rooms stacked in the tower above the entry. This is the last public building left in downtown Murray of the founding period: the City Hall, 25th District School, Central School, Bonnyview School and Murray High School are all gone.
Of the more than 40 LDS churches built in the Salt Lake Valley, outside of Salt Lake City around the turn of the century, this is one of only a handful still left, and one of the best preserved of that handful. Murray has something unique that Holladay, Kearns, Midvale, Draper, Sandy, South Jordan, West Jordan, East Millcreek, Herriman, and West Valley City do not have. Let's work to keep it.
