Toning down the academic talk for digestibility...
Now let us make your speech more digestible for an audience.
Now that you have identified a paper that fits within the time limit provided and presents your research, it is the time to read through your paper and identify any "unnatural" speaking language. There is often a strong difference between the manner of speech used in an academic paper and the manner of speech used in everyday conversation. While this is still a professional, academic context in which you are going to be presenting your paper, you can tone down the formality of your speech.
If you write in a formal manner (and not everyone does!), you likely noticed the uncomfort felt when reading your edited paper aloud in the last step. Unless you also speak in a highly formal manner, your writing style is likely not casual enough to sound natural when you read it. While not a significant problem, many people find it helpful to format their speech in a tone and style that is more natural to them, and therefore sounds more natural when spoken.
There is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to make speech more casual. You may find that adding in contractions in your sentences is more natural, despite contractions being traditionally considered too 'casual' for academic writing. Adapting your sentence structure to include fewer clauses may also feel more casual and natural than complicated sentences, allowing for an easier read.
Below is an activity designed to get you thinking about formal versus informal speech. It is not exhaustive, but provides a good overview.
There is no Generative AI component for this portion of the module since it requires the possible generation of new text.
