We reccomend that the first session be one hour long
Spend 5-10 minutes getting to know your student
ask them questions and be comfortable
Tell them about yourself; your hobbies, what sports you play, what grade you are in, etc.
If you like you can have an icebreaker game
Get to know the parents and be comfortable with them
You will be communicating a lot with the parents, so it is a good idea to talk to them in the first session
Talk about what times and days you are comfortable tutoring and what subjects
This will help you set a good schedule
Create a homework folder and report card folder for the student
talk to the parents if they want homework to be assigned
tell them about how often report cards will be sent
Explain to them about the saftey
If a student is less than 10 years old, they must supervise the meeting
let them know that all meetings are being recorded for volunteer hour calculation purposes
if they are uncomfortable with this, please feel free to email us
Tell them about the diagnostic test
Let them take the test
grade the test on you own time and determine the lesson plans for the next sessions
At the very first session, create a diagnostic test (we will provide samples) to see where the student is academically
Based on this, create your lesson plans
-Lesson Plans should look like this
- Each session should have its own lesson plan and with it should be linked all the worksheets/activities that you are planning to do
Many times, students don't recieve the encouragement that they are looking for. Encouragement is the best form of motivation
Here are a few ways to encourage and motivate your students:
