As undergraduate researchers in psychology, it is crucial to prioritize your own well-being and needs, in addition to those of your research participants. Psychology research can be emotionally and mentally demanding, and researchers may experience stress, burnout, or compassion fatigue. It is essential to take care of yourself to prevent these negative consequences and to maintain a healthy work-life balance. There are typically safeguards in place to protect participants from the negative consequences of research (e.g., the IRB). However, undergraduate researchers are often overlooked in the equation. If you are conducting research where you are being asked to complete tasks where it negatively affects you as an undergraduate researcher, it is perfectly acceptable to voice those concerns to the professor with whom you’re working. If you’re worried about potential negative consequences about speaking out, consider talking to a different professor and asking them to serve as your advocate.
