As a website designer, clients come to me with existing websites that need a new facelift. They are dated and make the business look dated as well.
Does your website need a facelift?
Here are a few trends that were prevalent in 2021 and will carry over to 2022.
Minimalist, or modern design. This is using whitespace intentionally. The background is white, there is more space around sections of the website to make it look easier to read and give everything more room. There is usually 1 accent color that is used sparingly. This is not a look for every business. Think of it as the total opposite of a busy website.
Full width – no more sidebars. This layout came with mobile-first design. Think of how websites look on cell phones – all 1 column. Expand that look to a desktop version. Designing for mobile first is a trend that will not be going away anytime soon. Things that used to be put into sidebars, like opt-in forms, are now getting a full width section all to themselves. Websites are now layed out in sections and not columns.
Hero images that are all type. Hero images (full width, large image at the top of a web page) can be attention grabbing, but they also load slowly. Since load time is now a ranking factor, many are moving away from using hero images. Instead they use larger Typography to make a bold statement. In the image below the background is a gradient (not an image) and the type is bold and beautiful.
For those that do not like the look of full-width, simple borders are trending. This is not the column look, but linear, colored borders that get applied to sections. These can also be section separators via color changes or a patterns (not images). The image below demonstrates this concept as well as typographical hero sections. There is a color change and pattern added for the section break. Also the simple color with text as the hero section adds interest and load speed. This website have very few images to slow it own.
Movement – This can be text or animated sections. This does not refer to video or background videos. Animations are created with coding, so they do not significantly slow down websites. The trend of adding text movement will continue into 2022.
Retro, bold fonts. Google fonts has changed web design. Before Google fonts, one had to use “web-safe” fonts, or they might get an unexpected result. Google fonts has made thousands of font types available for website usage. No longer are we limited to just a few fonts. Moving into 2022 to bolder fonts are trending for attention grabbing sections.
Black and white designs. These are websites with black backgrounds, and everything else is white. The logo, text, and any other graphics are all white. This creates a high contrast, and these sites can be beautiful with a minimalistic approach.
Dark Mode – This website has a black background and contrasting colors. The dark pallet is making a return!
Gaussian blurs – these are backgrounds that are very soft and the colors blend together. They are blurred with no sharp areas. This can be a very feminine look that just uses color.
Is your website ready for 2022?
Websites are meant to evolve and change along with your business. They are not created once and then done. Not only does the information need to be kept current, the look and feel of the website needs to stay current with modern design. Companies need to change parts of their website at least every few years. Otherwise they risk looking dated. Having a business look that is dated tells your customers that you are not keeping up with current trends. Sometimes it can even make your business look abandoned.

Which website builder is easiest to use?
I get this question all the time. The question should be, What website builder will give me the best search engine results? The reality is that website builder software is different from platform to platform. They are not equal.
This became evident to me early in my website-building career. A business owner would come to me with an existing website that was not performing well in the search engines. I would move that website into WordPress, change nothing else, and the website would perform better than previously. Everything was equal except the platform that contained the website.
Search engines love WordPress. Websites are easier to optimize using WordPress. I am told that WordPress editors are not easy for people to use. I do not have issues using the WordPress editor.
Reasons why WordPress is my website builder of choice
WordPress is expandable
Most businesses evolve. Your business will be different in 5 years. Your website needs may be different as well. One of the reasons I like to create websites in WordPress is that the platform is expandable. Will you ever offer a membership? Will you ever offer online courses? What about events? Will you ever need a shopping cart? Will you want to blog? How about a Vlog?
Often business owners cannot answer these questions. Their business may evolve in a not obvious way right now; with WordPress, that is ok. If your website is on a platform that does not offer the feature you want to add; it becomes a problem. At that point, you will need to move your website into a platform that does everything you need. But remember, your business might evolve again. Do you want to keep moving your website? It is like recreating the wheel.
You must choose a platform that offers everything your website will ever need. The great thing about WordPress is that it is expandable. Some plugins will do just about anything you will need. A plugin is a program that does one thing, like an Event plugin or a shopping cart plugin.
WordPress is customizable
WordPress can achieve almost any look you want. There are thousands of free themes and some very high-quality premium themes. I advocate using a premium (paid) theme because it will come with support.
If you want a slider, there are many to choose from. If you want a mega menu, it can do that. If you think of something you need, and it has not already been created, some developers can make it for you since WordPress is open source. It will cost money, but it can be done.
WordPress is SEO Friendly
Search engines love WordPress. There are also quality Search Engine Optimization plugins for WordPress. Yoast is the one I use. There are also schema and other plugins (that are free) that will help with SEO. WordPress is your best option since you want your website to get found on search engines.

There are many types of websites, which is best?
The best type of website serves the needs of YOUR business. I know that sounds vague, but it is true. The first step in figuring out what kind of website you need is how your company makes money. Then you can get what your business needs. I know that sounds over-simplified. Here is an example:
I have had businesses contact me wanting an eCommerce website. After discussing what they are selling, how they serve their clients, and how their existing clients pay, it was determined that they did not need a shopping cart. They just needed an informational website. These are two very different websites with significant additional costs.
Here is a list of some website types:
Informational – This is the most common type for small businesses and solopreneurs. These websites are glorified brochures with limited functionality. They introduce your potential clients to your company and services. If you are a service provider and have a few set-priced packages, a payment method can be added to these websites without adding an actual shopping cart.
eCommerce – These are websites that have a shopping cart. They can be for both products and services and can include download products. The key is the shopping cart. It integrates with a payment system like PayPal, Square, Stripe, etc. These websites can have informational pages added if needed.
Blogs – Strictly speaking, a blog is a website with just articles. It is easy for the average person to add content to the website. Blog platforms used to be only articles. Pages could not be added. That has not been true for many years. Now blogs can be added to informational websites (and some eCommerce platforms have them). They have evolved to be full-blown websites.
Membership – Membership plugins can be added to most websites. A membership website has protected content. One needs to be a member (free or paying) to see the protected content.
These sites also have the ability for members to reset passwords and add profile information. Not all membership platforms are the same. Be clear about your members’ needs and future needs before deciding on a platform. Changing platforms down the road can be complicated and cost you, members.
Course or Online Learning – These websites are for digital courses. They allow the user to have a learning environment online that can be video, text, audio, and interactive. These are for businesses that are teaching something to their clients. There are many different options, so be sure you know all the needs of your courses before purchasing the software.
Event websites – An event plugin can usually be added to any website. The event plugin will do things like put your event onto a calendar, allow the user to add it to their calendar easily, charge for events, add recurring events, and more. If you are holding events regularly, event software is convenient to use. There are a few different options, so know your event requirements before purchasing.
Portfolio websites – These are websites that show off works of art. Artists like photographers usually run them. However, a portfolio can be added to almost any website. This website has a portfolio section.
Does Every Business Need a Website?
This is a complicated question. I feel that all businesses need a website. But I have come across a few companies that did not need one.
Why are websites important?
There are many benefits to having a website. Some are obvious, and some not so much.
Websites are how a business can be found on the Internet. Without a website, it will be harder to get found, but not impossible. A company could have many social media sites, a Google Business Profile, a YouTube account, and other directory listings. All of these web properties can get listed in a search result. The one you have the most control over is your website.
Websites are a marketing machine. If put together correctly, they can be your marketing funnel, where you give away things to create an email list and where people learn about you and your business. They can encompass most aspects of marketing.
Websites increase the value of your business. They are a sellable asset. When it is time to sell your business, your website will be included in the sale. Well-functioning websites that have analytics connected and can prove the traffic volume and conversion rates can significantly increase the worth of your business.
Professional websites give your company a perceived value. People will judge the quality of your business by the quality of your website.
Communication with your customers. Websites can now have chatbots as well as contact forms. Customers can connect with business owners and get their questions answered. Many websites also provide a way for customers to schedule appointments.
Websites can decrease costs. By being your “store-front” 24/7, a website can replace some or all of your location costs.
Connecting to customer support through a chatbot can decrease expenses. As COVID has taught us, many employees can work remotely. The website can be the hub for your business and reduce your overhead.
Websites increase your reach. Your business can be found by anyone, anywhere. If you can figure out how to offer items for sale virtually, the whole world can be your market.
Websites with analytical data attached can give great insights into your customer base. Everything from how they find your website to where they live can be analyzed. What browsers they use, devices used, pages visited, and much more.
Websites allow businesses to take advantage of online advertising. Google AdWords, Facebook Ads, and others cannot be used without a website to send ad clicks to. Well-made landing pages can also decrease the cost of your ads.

Which do I need? Web Designer or SEO Expert?
Web designers need to work with SEO experts. For the best result, you will need both. Let your website designer handle the layout, user experience, and content. Once your website is launched, or for existing websites wait about 1 month after a website upgrade, then look at your results. If you are still not happy go to an SEO expert for additional technical fixes.
