Common Food Allergies and Treatment Options
Many people have food allergies, but you may not know exactly how allergies work. If you have questions about food allergies, triggers, treatment options, and more, contact urgent care near you. We offer food allergy care and other services at our Katy urgent care location.
What Are Common Food Allergies?
Most food allergies consist of the same eight foods, including:
Tree nuts
Fish
Shellfish
Eggs
Soybeans
Peanuts
Wheat
Eggs
Milk
You may be allergic to other foods, but these are the most common. If you are experiencing signs of an allergy, you will be tested for these allergens first.
What Triggers Food Allergies?
Eating the foods that you’re allergic to will cause an allergic reaction. It’s common sense to avoid those foods. Some common allergens can be hidden in other foods though. For example, baked goods may contain eggs or nuts. Salad dressing might contain soybean oil.
Get in the habit of reading food labels to make sure you don’t eat something you’re allergic to.
What Treatment is Available for Food Allergies?
If you have food allergies, visit urgent care to get treatment for allergies. We have experience with allergies and can offer a variety of treatment options to manage your food allergies.
If you know that you have a food allergy, you may have an EpiPen. This is an auto-injecting device that contains epinephrine. If your airway is shrinking as a result of an allergic reaction, this can open the airway and raise your blood pressure.
In some cases, over-the-counter antihistamines can be used to manage mild reactions. If you have hives, you may see success with Balladryl.
