This one was my first sighting. I mistakenly thought it was a snail. Although they are similar to orb weavers in their classification, they don't spin webs. Instead, they release a pheromone similar to the one that certain moths use to attract their mates. The bolas releases a strand silk with a sticky glob on it that the moth will use to capture her prey. The South American Gauchos have also used the bolas in their fight against the legs of animals to tamper with them. After mating the female will produce many eggs sacs. The spiderlings then emerge from the overwinter. This is where the male offspring are unique. They hatch as adults! They can already mate and there is no need to mature. Females must however complete their growth. These tiny, half-inch-long females can be found hanging out on the leaves of bushes or other plants. Although they look like poop (or snails), a careful eye could reveal one of Missouri’s most fascinating spiders.
