Introduce the 8 dimensions of wellbeing to the children so that they can in corporate some of the activities into their own lives by the end of my internship.
By the end of my internship I would like for the children to have learned ways to feel confident in being theirselves through the activities they complete.
There are so many career options I could pursue in graduate school. I am still trying to pinpoint what my concentration would be.
By the end of my internship I would like to have more of a concrete idea on whether or not I would like to work with children, specifically in counseling roles.
Did I accomplish my goals?
Overall I would say I was able to accomplish my goals I set for myself. I had a consistent group of about 5 students who actively participated in activities. They continuously voiced that they liked talking about our weekly topics and always were excited to know what we would be doing the next day. I think one aspect of programming that they liked was the journaling activities. The notebooks that were provided to me for the actives, will be theirs to keep after I leave Hawthorne. A lot of them seem excited to take them home, and use them for future use.
One thing I would change is how I go about yoga. The first time we did yoga the children were very energetic and had trouble focusing on the yoga stance. Before I introduce it to another group I would probably incorporate some sort of quiet activity before hand, like meditation and calming music.
What have I learned from each of my goals?
Through my time introducing the children to journaling, I rediscovered why journaling is important to me. I use journaling as a way to get things off my mind, de-stress, and to communicate with god through prayer. By allowing the children to identify what they want to use their journals for I decided I would use the one I am building with them for morning prayers.
Through my work as an intern, I have learned....
It so important to practice what your preach!
When trying to teach others how to take care of themselves, we often forget that we as teachers can practice the same techniques we are preaching about !
Sometimes I get really busy with all my different titles on campus, and will schedule everything else EXCEPT self care into my schedule. I have been working on putting little things such as "hang out with so and so" or "go skating" to make sure I am making time for myself.
For my overaching goal I realized I would not want to work with children in a counseling positions. If offered the opportunity to work with them in quiet settings in small groups, such as breakout tutors groups, I would enjoy that.
