Privacy Policy — Preceptor
Effective date: January 1, 2026
Last updated: June 20, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Preceptor ("we", "us", "our") handles information in connection with your use of our applications. "Preceptor" is a brand under which we offer a family of independent study tools that help candidates prepare for healthcare certification and licensing examinations. In this policy, "Preceptor", "our apps", and "the app" refer to any application we make available under the Preceptor brand.
We are based in Ontario, Canada. We have written this policy to be clear and honest. If anything is unclear, please contact us (see "Contact us" below).
By downloading, accessing, or using any Preceptor app, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy.
1. Summary (the short version)
Our apps do not require you to create an account.
We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or precise location.
Your study progress is stored only on your device — we do not receive a copy.
We do not display advertising.
We do not sell or rent your personal information to anyone.
The only times information leaves your device are: (a) if you use an optional AI feature (available in some apps), and (b) when you make a purchase — both explained in detail below.
2. Information we handle
2.1 Information you provide directly
Our apps have no sign-up or login, so we do not ask for or collect personal details such as your name or email. If you choose to email us for support, we will have whatever information you include in that message.
2.2 Study progress (stored locally on your device)
To remember your progress between sessions, our apps save the following on your device only (using local on-device storage):
which questions you have answered and whether you answered correctly;
questions you have flagged or saved for review;
your scores and progress counts;
whether you have unlocked premium content.
This data stays on your device. We do not upload, transmit, or store a copy of it on our servers. You can clear it at any time using the in-app "Reset progress" option (where available), or by uninstalling the app.
2.3 AI features (optional, where offered)
Some Preceptor apps include an optional AI feature that can generate explanations or other study content. When — and only when — you request this, the relevant question text and your selected answer are transmitted, through a secure relay, to our third-party AI provider to generate that content, which is then returned to you. This content:
is used solely to produce your educational material;
is not tied to your real-world identity by us;
is not used by us to build a profile about you.
If you prefer not to transmit any content, you can simply not use the feature; the rest of the app works without it.
2.4 Purchase information
Our apps are generally free to download. Some features or content may require a purchase (for example, a one-time unlock or a subscription). Purchases are processed by the app store from which you downloaded the app (the Apple App Store or Google Play) together with our purchase-management provider, RevenueCat, Inc. Payment is handled entirely by those services. We never receive or store your credit/debit card number or full payment details. We may receive a confirmation that a purchase occurred, along with an anonymous purchase/transaction identifier, so the app can recognize your purchase and keep content unlocked (including if you reinstall).
2.5 Automatically collected technical and diagnostic data
The app distribution platforms (the Apple App Store and Google Play) and the services we use may automatically collect limited, largely aggregated technical data — such as crash logs, app version, general device model, and app performance/installation statistics — in accordance with their own policies. We use this only to keep our apps stable and functioning. We do not use it to identify you personally.
2.6 What we do NOT collect
We do not collect your contacts, photos, microphone or camera input, precise GPS location, health records, or any special-category personal data. Preceptor apps do not track you across other apps or websites.
3. How we use information
We use the limited information described above to:
provide each app's core functionality and remember your progress on your device;
generate AI content when you request it (in apps that offer it);
process and restore your purchase and keep premium content unlocked;
maintain, secure, debug, and improve our apps;
comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms.
We do not use your information for advertising or for sale to third parties.
4. Legal bases for processing
Where Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA) applies, we handle information based on your consent and for purposes a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the circumstances. Where the EU/UK GDPR applies to users in those regions, our legal bases are:
Performance of a contract — to deliver the app and your purchase;
Consent — for optional AI features (you choose to use them);
Legitimate interests — to keep our apps secure, stable, and functioning, balanced against your rights.
You may withdraw consent (for example, by not using an AI feature, or by uninstalling the app) at any time.
5. Service providers and third parties
We rely on a small number of reputable providers ("processors") who handle data only as needed to provide their service:
Apple Inc. — app distribution, billing, and diagnostic data for apps downloaded from the Apple App Store. Governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
Google LLC / Google Play — app distribution, billing, and diagnostic data for apps downloaded from Google Play. Governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
RevenueCat, Inc. — manages and validates in-app purchases. Receives an anonymous purchase identifier; does not receive your card details.
Each provider operates under its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review them. We do not authorize any of these providers to use your information for their own independent marketing.
6. International data transfers
We are based in Canada, and some of our service providers are located in the United States or other countries. This means information involved in AI features or purchases may be processed outside your country of residence, in jurisdictions whose data-protection laws may differ from your own. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as the providers' contractual protections) for such transfers.
7. Data sharing and disclosure
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We may disclose information only:
to the service providers listed above, to operate our apps;
if required by law, regulation, legal process, or enforceable governmental request;
to protect the rights, property, or safety of our users, the public, or us;
in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case we will require the recipient to honor this Privacy Policy.
8. Data retention
Because your study progress lives on your device, you control its lifetime — "Reset progress" or uninstalling the app removes it. We do not maintain our own database of your activity. Purchase records and diagnostic data are retained by the respective providers (Apple, Google, RevenueCat) according to their policies and our legal/accounting obligations.
9. Security
We design our apps to keep your study data on your device and to route any purchase or AI requests through established providers that use industry-standard encryption in transit. While no method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, we take reasonable and appropriate measures to protect your information.
10. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict the processing of your personal information, and to data portability or to object to certain processing. Because we hold very little personal information about you, you can exercise most control directly in the app:
Reset progress — clears your locally stored data (where available);
Don't use AI features — prevents any question content from being transmitted;
Uninstall — removes all locally stored data from your device.
For purchase data, you can also use your Apple or Google Play account controls. To make any other request, contact us using the details below, and we will respond as required by applicable law. Users in the EU/UK have the right to lodge a complaint with their local data-protection authority; users in Canada may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
We do not "sell" or "share" personal information as those terms are defined under California law (CCPA/CPRA).
11. Children's privacy
Preceptor apps are intended for healthcare trainees and professionals and are not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
12. Local storage and cookies
Our apps use on-device local storage to save your progress (as described in section 2.2). Preceptor apps do not use advertising cookies or cross-app tracking technologies.
13. Third-party links
Our apps or this policy may reference third-party services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those third parties; their policies govern your use of their services.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as our apps evolve (for example, when features are added, new apps are released, or providers change). When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of our apps after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
15. Medical and affiliation disclaimer
Preceptor apps are independent educational study tools. They are not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or otherwise connected to any college, examination board, licensing authority, certification body, or other official organization, including (without limitation) those that administer or govern the examinations our apps help you prepare for. All content is provided for exam-preparation and educational purposes only and does not constitute medical or professional advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always rely on authoritative clinical sources and professional judgment in patient care.
