These urns, which are made of two solid marbles at the entrance and side naves of the building, belong to the Hellenistic Period (330-30 BC) and were brought toHagia Sophia from the ancient city of Pergamon (Bergama) during the reign of Sultan Murad III (1574-1595). Sherbet (sweetened juice) was distributed on the holynights and after 'Eid prayers by means of these urns, which could hold approximately 1250 liters of liquid. For this reason, there are taps at the bottom of the urnsthat contain water on other days.

You can check the exact times for the call to prayer for any place in the world on the website of the Republic of Turkey's Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet leri Bakanl) so as to plan your visits to the city's great mosques. More...

Non-Muslim's should also avoid visiting on Friday late morning through early afternoon, which is when the weekly group prayers and sermons take place. In short, if the mosque is busy with worshippers, it's polite to return later to visit.

Speaking at the opening of the event at a hotel in Istanbul, Diyanet chair professor Ali Erba said he hoped that the International Prayer Times Congress would reach a conclusion that would minimize differences and disagreements in prayer times. He said they have been working for Islamic calendar unity and unity in prayer times since 2016.

Though this symphony of sorts was impressive from anywhere in town, the most extraordinary happened while listening to the battle of the call to prayer between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque while sitting on the benches in the middle of the two.

This API lets you fetch daily prayer times from Presidency of Religious Affairs of Turkey(Diyanet leri Bakanl) in a nice, clean format. You can use it to find a location with available prayer times info, then query the schedule of that month's prayer times.

I've created this API to prepare for a web app I'll be building soon.I am planning to structure it as a progressive web app that can be easily installedand even planning to add push notifications to let user know of upcoming prayers.

Initially the calls to prayer seemed exotic and sometimes even startling. Each one was noteworthy and spurred conversation among my traveling companions. We were never quite sure when it would next occur, or how close we would be standing to loudspeakers until it happened.

The Diyanet was instrumental in thwarting a 2016 military coup that sought to unseat Erdogan. Officials sent out a memo ordering mosques to turn on their loudspeakers and invite the public not to prayers but to the streets, to confront tanks and fighter jets.

Along with the adhan, the mosques broadcast a hymn that has a long history in the Islamic world of being used to rally the public in times of war. In World War I, for instance, locals climbed the minarets of mosques in Istanbul to sound the alarm as European forces advanced on the city. In 1922, the same calls were made as Ottoman soldiers, under the command of Ataturk, took control of Izmir from Greek troops.

Hagia Sophia is now a mosque, which means it closes for prayers 5 times a day. Prayer times vary seasonally. The closure can be quite long (more than an hour). You can probably find specific information online by checking not too long before you arrive in Istanbul. If you arrive during a period when the mosque is closed, you'll probably need to queue up on the south side (between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque) before entry. The line moves fast, but first you have to find the end of the line and get to it; there will be a lot of barricades. Ask one of the policemen; their English may be limited, but they'll know what you want based on where you are.

As acraven has described, depending on the time of day you may not be able to get right in, especially when cruise ships are in town. In September the lines midday on a weekend were exceptionally long. BTW, you also have to go through a security screen (scanning bags and metal detector) which is part of the reason for the wait. Inside the mosque there are also crowd control barriers - depending on how close to prayers you visit and the crowd level, you may not be able to go in to the main space very far, or you may get directed in a one way route. I went twice and it was a different set up each time.

During the prayer hours/periods you are not allowed to be inside the mosque. But in between two sessions you are more than welcome. Some people might be praying outside the obligatory prayer times during your visit. Do not stare at, stand close to or walk in front of them.

Undoubtedly one of Istanbul's most popular mosques, the Blue Mosque is an Ottoman-era imperial mosque located in Faith, Istanbul, Turkey. The Blue Mosque is considered an iconic monument of the Ottoman area and also receives an influx of tourists every year, mostly because of its stunning architecture and historical significance. The mosque has a traditional Ottoman layout architecture with a central dome that is further surrounded by four semi-domes over its prayer halls. The mosque also has a primary school built over the boundary wall on the mosque's eastern side. Moreover, the mosque also includes a madrassa. However, the medium of education in the school and madrassa are likely to be in Turkish.

According to Ishak Kizilaslan, the Imam of the mosque, the mosque has the capacity to host 20,000 worshippers simultaneously. However, if you're planning on visiting the mosque as a tourist and may not necessarily perform your prayers there, it's worth noting that since the Blue Mosque is a working mosque, it is closed for 90 minutes during the time of the prayer and for around 2 hours during Friday afternoon prayers for tourists. Therefore, plan your visit accordingly. The mosque is a short walk from the bustling Sultanahmet tram stop. ff782bc1db
