Prashant Mittal studied engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University College of Engineering, Kota and received his Bachelor of Technology in 2011. In July 2012, he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh for his M.Tech. 

In July 2016, he Joined Nanoscale Tribology, Mechanics, and Microscopy of Materials (NTM3) group under Prof. Nitya Nand Gosvami at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi for his Ph.D. degree and graduated in September 2021. His Ph.D.thesis work was on "In Situ Microscale Tribology of Al-Si alloy under Boundary Lubricated Conditions” which is focused upon understanding the nanoscale mechanical and tribological properties of metallic materials with different lubricant additives, where he has explored the fundamental mechanics of friction, wear, deformation, and processes occurring under dry and at the solid-liquid interfaces at small length scales". He gained significant expertise in several characterization tools like Optical Microscope (OM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Fourier Transform Infrared Radiation (FTIR), Nano Instrumented Indentation and Micro Indentation. 

His PhD work has been reflected in prestigious journals and international conference posters/papers. Three research articles were published in highly reputed journals such as Tribology International ©Elsevier, Tribology Letters ©Springer, Advanced Engineering Materials ©Wiley and Applied Surface Science ©Elsevier. In January 2020, the 22nd International Colloquium committee members acknowledged his Ph.D. research work at an international conference in Stuttgart, Germany, Europe

In January 2022, he joined Advanced Material Group (AdMAT) under the supervision of Professor Tomas Polcar at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University, Prague, Czech Republic, for his postdoc. Currently, his work is based on nanotribology of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMD's) coating 2D material prepared by different sputtering and vapor deposition processes, particularly on silicon wafer. He is also working on the exfoliation of amorphous and polycrystalline forms of TMD materials.
