Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Teaching Philosophy:

Teaching is a great passion and a very stimulating experience. It is a process of mutual learning; and this is especially so in a research environment where there is exploration of knowledge.

Teaching requires the teacher to clearly state and explain concepts to the learner. This acts as a enabling factor for the teacher to have these concepts clear in mind. Teaching needs appropriate abstractions of concepts to enable meaningful learning -- the process of forming such abstractions helps the teacher in understanding those concepts well. And these abstractions ultimately help in better understanding of the body of knowledge, and hence facilitate in expanding it through research

My journey in this profession of teaching began 28 years back in SNS polytechnic at a remote place named SUNKADAKATTE, where providing basic facilities to the students was a challenging task. The student’s enthusiasm to acquire knowledge and their limitations in achieving their task ignited my responsibility as a teacher. Moreover, this developed simplicity and sincerity in my life. To facilitate the student requirements become the part of my life. Since then, sharing and bearing good and bad experiences with my students became an integral part of my life.

In my view delivering information and knowledge to a group of people flocked in a particular place cannot be considered as teaching. Teaching is one in which dissemination of acquired information with added values . In the process, the attainment of the said objectives by the use of appropriate technology should be in the prime agenda. My philosophy is that learning should be student-driven, and that as a teacher, fostering enthusiasm for new knowledge among students, while simultaneously teaching them the skills to seek out that the new knowledge is created on their own. With different modes of learning in the classes, students take advantage of their areas of strength and it also provides an authentic learning experiences for all types of learners.

Treating all students with absolute equality, regardless of age, gender, nationality, intellectual ability or personal attractiveness. Collaboration between students. I believe it is important for students to learn to work together. I provide opportunities for student collaboration in laboratory sessions, which are always done in groups; with writing assignments, where working with partners or teams is always an option; and through fostering in-classroom discussions

It is my business to try to understand the student's point of view, however erroneous before attempting to give them my own. This means that when subjects are taught, it is nothing but choosing a conceptual path that leads from the student’s current understanding to a broader or more conventional one.

In my entire teaching career, always intended to be a good professional example by written solutions and in conversation with my peer group as well as my students.

Teaching writing skills.

In my opinion, it is critical that all students graduating with a bachelor’s degree be able to communicate effectively and problem solving skills. They must able to identify the social problems and find the engineering solution to fix that problem In my higher level classes students are assigned to work in pairs on research papers and allow students to comment each other’s first drafts as part of the assignment. Fundamentally, my primary goal when teaching is to motivate students to think critically about what they are learning, and understand not just what we know, but why we know it.

Teaching Philosophy and Methodology

Mentoring Experience

I had mentoring opportunities during my teaching career. That makes me to understand the actual problem of a student otherwise it is impossible to understand attitude and behaviour of a student
