Ben Franklin (pictured above) is the embodiment of a practicing American. He was for liberty, truth, and justice. He was pro-humanity, pro-reason, and pro-science. Ben Franklin was a Deist and took part in formation of the images on the Dollar Bill.
The core Founding Fathers like Ben Franklin were philosophers and scientists who used the scientific methodology to create "a more perfect union." Franklin's scientific spirit is depicted in the short video below titled "How do we know what is true."
In the video "Benjamin Franklin - Animated Hero Classic," at ten minutes in we see how Franklin fought against the supernatural-fundamentalists of his day who argued that lightning was caused by a god's anger. Franklin uses science to debunk the religious fundamentalists of his day and reduces harm in the world as a result. The cartoon is well worth the watch to see how American was founded on scientific deism more than anything else.

The American Way of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Paine, was based on Deism: the belief in a Higher Power or an ineffable Divinity that is akin to Nature or Natural Laws or Principles (as Steven Covey puts it) rather than through revelation-claims and holy books.
We see in history that the Deists worked with liberal and conservative Christians of their day to form America. To learn more about the American Founder's and their "American Spirituality" see the book below:
