QLC 2019 - Efficient and Meaningful Posts

Being Efficient with Time

In 2018, I trialed video analysis to improve physical skills with all my year groups. I used peer and self assessment, but found that some of the assessments I undertook were too time consuming for me and for the students.

Ultimately, I want to the girls to be active in my lessons as much as possible. Given the short amount of time we see the girls each week, I want to maximise time on task and don't want to be using big chunks of PE lessons to complete SeeSaw posts.

I also need to be conscious of how much time is taking to post assessments especially for the younger year groups.

Year 1-2 Review and Next Steps

My idea of posting pre and posts tests was effective but very time consuming. I have started this year recording striking videos for Year 1 and 2 and will use this as the focus for assessment (last year was throwing). I have found that already I am being more efficient with capturing skills and this is not impacting my lessons too much.

In Year 1-2, I will continue to record all the girls in Term 1 and then again in Term 3 and then upload both videos with a reflection and comment.

Years 3-6

I found this group to be the most difficult last year, as the SeeSaw posts took a long time. This year I want to just post their pre and post tests for fitness along with a focus on a goal and skill they want to improve, so then I am not having to record/share and chase up the assessment posts for something that I have set. It may be more meaningful for the students if it is goal that they have set.

I need to get the girls to focus one specific skill and make sure this is done correctly.

Year 7-8

I found that in 2018, by getting the girls to record a partners technique and then peer coach, the quality of my lessons dropped, as I was always conscious about what the video looked like and spent time, often staged shots and video trying to capture what I was trying to assess. The girls were not great at peer assessment and although their was some positive feedback about peer coaching, most preferred to have teacher input.

I don't want to completely abandon the idea of peer coaching, but I need to find a good balance between the girls and teacher giving and receiving feedback.

In Years 7-8 I have recorded swimming videos and may look into using the gopro in Term 4. There is also a coaching app called Slow Mo which analyses technique.

This year, my goal is to learn from last year and modify the assessment posts so I am focusing on :

  • Is this a meaningful post?
  • Is what I am doing an effective use of time (both teacher and student)?
Year 1 Throwing Assessment 2018

This is an example of a Year 2 student and a Year 7 student self assessment and her reflection on how to improve her throw.
