Understanding Cultural Contexts: Participants will gain knowledge about the cultural, historical, and socio-political factors that impact the Latino population's experience of trauma and mental health. This includes understanding how acculturation, immigration status, family dynamics, and community values influence their experiences and help-seeking behaviors.
Implementing Trauma-Informed Practices: Participants will learn to apply trauma-informed care principles specifically tailored to the needs of the Latino population in peer support groups. This includes recognizing trauma symptoms, creating a safe and supportive environment, and promoting empowerment through culturally sensitive communication and interventions.
Enhancing Cultural Competence: Participants will develop skills to enhance cultural competence when working with Latino peers, including strategies for overcoming language barriers, understanding cultural expressions of distress, and respecting diverse cultural identities. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of cultural humility and continuous learning.
Facilitating Peer Support with Sensitivity: Participants will explore best practices for facilitating peer support that are both trauma-informed and culturally relevant to the Latino community. This includes fostering trust, and addressing the unique needs of Latino peers through culturally appropriate activities, discussions, and resources.
