The existing playground structure was built in 1998, and has served the students at Prince of Wales, and the community of Parkland beyond it's lifespan. The existing space does not comply with current CBE playground guidelines. The identified community need is for a safe, inclusive and accessible space that supports the developmental, physical, emotional and social needs of children while also serving as a gathering place for the broader community.
Students have been engaged in the planning of the project through both classroom-based learning and hands-on experiential activities. Students have studied the qualities of various building materials, explored biodiversity and ecosystems by visiting other community green spaces, and constructed model park features using recycled materials. Engagement will continue over the coming year. Students will research, select, and plant a class tree. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to vote on equipment colors. These activities foster critical thinking, decision-making, and pride while ensuring the revitalized park reflects the school community’s needs, values, and imagination..
