Research aims
The aims of this research project were to:
Develop an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of poverty in Ireland using
photographs, sound files, video/film, drawing/mapping to capture meaning;
Explore the hidden geographies of poverty using a creative, walking based methodology;
Document the voices of persons experiencing poverty;
Document the challenges associated with experiences of poverty;
Develop an artifact in the form of an animated-short in conjunction with the research participants
for use as a resource for ATD;
Generate research data of relevance to ATD and related support and advocacy groups in their
work with people experiencing poverty.
Findings
The findings of this research project suggest that poverty in childhood can have a major impact across the life course, that poverty often manifests as a lack of good options, that socioeconomic discrimination and territorial stigma are core features of poverty and that experiences of poverty strongly illustrate a divided society.
