The short version: PourChoice does not sell your data, does not serve ads, and does not require an account. The camera is used only to scan beer menus — no images are stored or transmitted.
PourChoice collects only the minimum data needed to provide its features:
Your beer ratings and Want to Try list — stored privately in your personal iCloud account via Apple's iCloud Key-Value Store. Only you can access this data.
Community beer confirmations and ratings — when you confirm or rate a beer, a record is written to a shared CloudKit database. This includes the beer name, brewery, style, and your rating. It does not include your name, Apple ID, or any personally identifiable information. A random device identifier is used solely to prevent duplicate submissions.
Manually added beers — beers you add to the database are stored locally and may be contributed to the community database to help other users.
PourChoice uses your device's camera to scan beer menus using on-device text recognition (Apple's Vision framework). No images or video are ever stored, transmitted, or uploaded. All processing happens entirely on your device.
No name, email address, or Apple ID
No location data
No photos or camera images
No browsing history or behavior analytics
No advertising identifiers
No data is sold to or shared with third parties
Your personal ratings and Want to Try list are stored in Apple's iCloud Key-Value Store, which syncs across your own devices. This data is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. If you are not signed into iCloud, your data is saved locally on your device only.
PourChoice uses Apple's CloudKit to power a shared community beer database. When you rate or confirm a beer, that data is stored in a public CloudKit container. Contributions are associated with a random device-level identifier — not your Apple ID or any personal information. This identifier cannot be used to identify you.
If you grant permission, PourChoice may send local notifications reminding you to rate beers after a scan session. These notifications are scheduled entirely on-device and do not involve any external servers.
PourChoice offers a one-time Pro upgrade via Apple's StoreKit. All payment processing is handled by Apple. PourChoice does not receive or store any payment information.
PourChoice is intended for adults of legal drinking age. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.
If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
