This project was to find two different articles describing ways cybersecurity was under attack. I chose Skimming Devices and ransomware attacks as I have been a victim of both at one point and bringing awareness to what seems so unlikely Is Important to me.
Skimming devices are gadgets criminals put on gas pumps and ATMs to steal your credit card info and commit identity theft when you swipe. Many people don’t check for these devices, making it easy for thieves to take your information. To stay safe, check the card reader before you use it, and consider using tap-to-pay instead, or even making sure to use cash or go Inside at gas stations.
MGM Resorts will pay $45 million to settle lawsuits after two cyberattacks, including a ransomware attack in 2023. The attacks stole personal info like names and Social Security numbers from over 37 million customers. Victims will get payments based on what info was stolen, with extra money available if they can show they lost money because of identity theft. While It's harder to protect ourselves from a company losing our Information, this shows to be careful who we hand It out to, even If It feels safe.
Lesson Learned
From this project, I learned that these crimes I've experienced can even trick whole companies on a much grander scale. It brought attention to how Important cybersecurity really Is.
