Who is welcome?
Any classroom in the world that would like to communicate with other schools and learn more about the world in the process is encouraged to register. This is open to any grade level. It would be nice to get schools in a variety of states/countries.
How can you join?
Add your information to the form on the Home Page.
REMINDER
Teaching circumstances sometimes change last minute which is understandable, but please don't sign up for the postcard exchange if you can't commit 100% to sending postcards to the other classes in the exchange. If your circumstances change and you won't be able to follow through, please let ALL of the other classes in the exchange know via email ASAP.
What do you have to do?
Create and mail (snail mail or share a link to) ONE postcard to each school in your Postcard Exchange group. Include these 10 facts:
Grade level
# of students in the class
# of students in the school
What is your favorite hot lunch meal?
Ave. Jan. high temperature
Ave. July high temperature
Describe major geographical features near you.
Name a few famous people from your city/state.
If your class/school has a blog, website, or other social media account, please list them.
What is your school mascot?
You can always include other information if you'd like. You only need to send ONE postcard to each school on the list, but if you want each of your students to make a postcard you can certainly send more than one postcard.
How should we send the postcards?
EVERYONE needs to fill out the Postcard Form (which will be shared with you in September/October) when you get your postcard finished where you will include a link to a digital version of your postcard. These links will be shared out to the whole group, so everyone has access to all of the completed postcards. Some schools may choose to also send a postcard via regular mail. We want to be mindful that sometimes the snail mail eats the postcards and they don't make it to the destination. AND/OR Some schools don't have the funds to send the postcards by mail. Not a problem!
Please make sure your link goes to a version of your postcard that can be easily accessed online. Not all schools have access to the same software, so try to avoid linking to a PowerPoint, Word doc, etc... A PDF would be a good option.
Is there a deadline?
Let's not start sending postcards until after November 15th so we can see how many people want to participate. Sometimes we get last minute additions to the group. Postcards should be in the mail by no later than February 28th, so all postcards will be received well before the end of the school year. ***Some schools in other parts of the world finish their school year in December and get a new set of students at the beginning of January/February, so you may need to send their postcard ASAP.***
What can we do before we send the postcards?
Have students draw the images that you use on the postcards. They could do this by hand or on the computer.
Have students brainstorm information to include on the postcard. They may need to do some research to find the 10 basic facts listed above and any other information.
Practice writing friendly letters, and write a friendly letter on the back of the postcard using the information you brainstormed.
Practice writing addresses, and write the addresses of the schools on the back of the postcards.
What can we do with the postcards we receive?
You could create a Google map, give students a world map of their own, or use a bulletin board to pin the locations of the postcards you receive.
You could take a virtual field trip to the school/class websites.
You could visit the school/class/student blogs, read their posts, and leave them some comments.
You could compare information on the postcards in a Venn diagram.
You could create a graph with information from the postcards.
These are just a few suggestions. If you have a great idea or photos, please share with us on Facebook, Instagram or X (Twitter) using #GPE25_26.
You are welcome to post the Global Postcard Exchange Badge on your blog, website, social media.
