Teaching Philosophy:
My philosophy is that studying literature and composition makes us better able to think critically about the world and construct meaning from our experience of living in it. Both skills are essential to developing the empathy we need to understand the world and the diverse people who live in it. My background in performance, anthropology, and software development informs the subjective, heuristic approach I use in communicating this philosophy to my students. Coursework and class activities are designed to balance individual creativity and interpretation with group communication and collaboration. Throughout my teaching career, I endeavor to meet the following goals: to promote both creative and critical thought, to demonstrate to students that reading and writing are important to their lives, to serve as a fellow learner and facilitator, and to include the students’ own cultural and social backgrounds as key course texts.
Online Learning Experience:
As a student, I have been using Blackboard since it was invented, with brief forays into Moodle and Edumodo, depending on the school I have taken classes from. One of my favorite things about taking online coursework is also one of the most challenging: keeping a steady pace of progress without having to be held accountable for that progress in twice weekly in-person class meetings. As an educator, I have used Moodle and Blackboard extensively, as well as Google Classroom. I like how Google classroom integrates with the lessons I have prepared using different digital learning apps.
Interests:
Interactive fiction, my pets, travel, art, culture, video games, writing, and media production.
