Hi there! My name is Laura Oosthoek, though I prefer going by "Polly" when online. I'm an aspiring game dev, voice actor, and writer! My goal is to learn enough about game development to go off on my own, and make my own game, one that'll leave an impression. The kind of game you finish, turn off, and think about for a long time. One that never truly leaves your brain, taking a constant reprieve in the corners of your mind... a game that I can truly be proud of! Whether it's through story writing, art, music or gameplay, I want the games I make to mean something. Whether small or big, whether minor or major. I truly believe games are the most versatile form of consumable media, and I want to use that potential to its fullest extent. I hope you'll find that passion in the games I've made, and I hope you enjoy them! Of course, that doesn't mean the only type of game I make is one that's very serious and story-based. What's truly most important to me about making games, is to make sure the person playing them has fun, because games are meant to be enjoyed!
Main Skills
Programming
The most important one. I've been coding for games for over a decade, now! Starting with Scratch, going all the way to Unity, my current engine of choice. I love programming, and I love fixing errors and the like, finding solutions to problems! Whether it be game development or software development.
Writing
Something I've been doing since roughly 3 years ago, is writing. Mostly for the purposes of writing fanfiction, though I've also written thousands of words of in-game dialogue! Writing is something I am incredibly passionate about.
(Bean Game is a great example of this!)
Voice Acting
I'll be honest and to the point with this one.
I. Love. Voice acting.
I ADORE getting into a role, speaking like how a character would, and I live for emotional scenes in particular. Voicing/roleplaying anger is one of the most fun things I know to do.
Programming Languages
C#
My programming language of choice, and the one I have most experience with. I've used it for roughly 5 years now, and I'm very comfortable with using it. Especially with Unity.
Haxe
A lesser known language, but one I've used time and time again when modding existing games. Most notably, I gained 99% of my experience with it through modding Dicey Dungeons.
Json
A common, easy method of storage, one I've utilized for my own projects, and learned for modding. I mostly used it when modding PVZ Heroes, adding custom cards and decks to the game.
Javascript
I have sufficient practice with javascript to understand the basics, having worked with it for a full year.
GML
GML is the language used by Gamemaker Studio. Though I've not much experience with the engine itself, making custom Rivals of Aether characters gave me plenty.
SQL
I've set up several databases to keep track of play data from games I've made, and thus have additional experience with Svelte.
Various Software
Unity
My game engine of choice. I have over 3 years of experience on my belt working with it now, and I'm very familiar with it. If you're making games in Unity, I'll slot right in!
Paint.net
Yes, really. I've been using this program to make varying edits over the span of 10 years, now. I know it's unusual, but I can make edits just as good as programs like Photoshop, if not better.
Adobe Premiere Pro
I've got a very solid grasp on basic video editing. Though I have much more to learn still, there's a very solid foundation in place.
Blender
I've got the basics of Blender down for 3d modelling, though I'm definitely still learning, as well.
Disco Demeanor
A top-down twinstick shooter made in 4 weeks, about a robot trying to get some fuel to power her rocket ship!
