EXTENDED LEARNING & WORD STUDY

I plan to add word study and extended learning next week, when it is clear that students can handle more assignments.

Extended Learning:

• Students will read and discuss a Newsela article for the week. I have generally chosen a number of articles for them to choose in the past, but there are weeks ahead that I plan to allow students to chose their own article, speech, or story.
• Students will complete the quiz that is included with the article and will be required to take notes as they read. If they are reading a speech they will be asked to take note of a specific instance of claim, evidence, and reasoning, and at least five instance of rhetoric in order to practice for assignments they may come across in the future, such as benchmarks or MCAP.

Word Study:

• Students will learn around seven new words that share a latin root. Students have been studying words in this manner since the start of the semester, so they are also required to learn all of the roots that have been studied.
• For their word study "homework" students will complete a packet of assignments that help them practice vocabulary words and will also practice the terms through Quizlet.
