Tony Finau arrives with the lead in the FedEx Cup standings after his Monday victory at The Northern Trust. The top 70 players on the points list will be competing in this no-cut event, trying to secure spots in the top 30 by the end of the final round in order to advance to the Tour Championship at East Lake, where the FedEx Cup champion will be crowned.
Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Harris English, Bryson DeChambeau and Abraham Ancer round out the top 10 in the points standings ahead of play this week. Among those eyeing the top 30 bubble with interest is Rory McIlroy, currently No. 28 in the standings, who will need a strong week at Caves Valley to tee off at East Lake.
Last year’s BMW Championship featured a thrilling playoff Rahm and Dustin Johnson. Rahm won at Olympia Fields after a 66-foot birdie bomb, but DJ had the last laugh winning the Tour Championship.
The BMW winner will earn a prize money payout of $1.71 million share of the $9.5 million purse. He’ll also receive 2,000 FedEx Cup points.

The second of three FedEx Cup Playoffs events takes place at Caves Valley in Maryland this week. There are now just eight rounds left in the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. This week's BMW Championship marks the second FedEx Cup Playoffs event, and for the first time in nearly six decades, the Tour is heading back to the Baltimore area at Caves Valley Golf Club.
Caves Valley should feature well on television, and any time you have have 70 of the best players in the world teeing it up, you're going to get a great leaderboard. Throw in some mega-gettable holes early on this course, and there's plenty to watch for on the course. There's also plenty to watch for off of it with FedEx Cup standings shifting around and Ryder Cup points being finalized.
Jon Rahm comes in as the preeminent storyline as he's been (by far) the best player in the world for several months now and narrowly missed out on a playoff last week at The Northern Trust. He's the heavy favorite, and he should be. But he's not the FedEx Cup leader. That would be Tony Finau, who bested Rahm and everyone else last week in the first round of these playoffs. Whether he can maintain that lead and start the Tour Championship at 10 under next week is another big narrative as the golf unfolds this week.
There will be several more that emerge as this no-cut event wears on, and you can follow them all throughout the week both at CBSSports.com and on myriad media platforms over all four days.

What started out as 125 has been cut down to 69 golfers in the race for the 15 million dollar prize at the end of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Last week saw the seemingly impossible finally come to fruition as Tony Finau got that big monkey off his back and won for the second time in his career as he claimed the 2021 Northern Trust title against an elite field.
The win for Tony will surely lift the weight of the world off his shoulders and I fully expect the floodgates to open now as it pertains to his career, he is simply that talented, and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he were to follow his success from last week with another win this week at the BMW Championship.
The field of 69 (following Patrick Reed’s withdrawal) are guaranteed all four rounds this week in a no-cut event with the top 30 in the standings following the BMW Championship continuing on to the Tour Championship at East Lake CC next week for the PGA season and FedEx Cup finale.
The 2021 BMW Championship features the 70 players who have survived the regular season and last week’s Northern Trust to make it this far, and it all gets started on Thursday in Maryland.
The PGA Tour is back in the Baltimore area for the first time since 1962 this week for the 2021 BMW Championship, which features a total purse of $9.5 million with $1.71 million going to the winner.
The GOLF Channel and NBC will televise the tournament from Caves Valley in Owing Mills, Maryland. GOLF Channel coverage is from 3 to 7 p.m. (Eastern) Thursday and Friday, from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and noon to 2 p.m. Sunday. NBC will pick up coverage from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
This is the second stop in the 2021 PGA Tour Fed Ex Cup playoffs. Tony Finau won last week in a Monday finish at Liberty National in New Jersey. Jon Rahm is the defending champion at the BMW Championship.
