Poplar, Narrowleaf
Poplar, Narrowleaf
Narrowleaf poplar, also known as the columnar poplar or Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra 'Italica') is a fast-growing deciduous tree that is well-known for its narrow, upright form. It is a cultivar of the black poplar, which is native to Europe and western Asia.
The Narrowleaf poplar typically grows to a height of 40 to 60 feet (12 to 18 meters) with a spread of only 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.6 meters). Its tall and narrow form makes it an excellent choice for screening or as a vertical accent in the landscape. It has a distinctive columnar shape, with tightly packed branches that grow straight up from a single trunk. The leaves are small, triangular, and have a shiny dark green color that turns yellow in the fall.
