The 37th Annual Meeting of the Society of Population Ecology will be held online, with the organizing committee in the Faculty of Advanced Science and Technology, Ryukoku University, using an online system similar to that used for the joint meeting with the Environmental DNA Society last year. The importance of Evidence Based Policy Making (EBPM) has been highlighted by the outbreak of sars-cov-2 virus since the beginning of 2020. However, at the same time, non-evidence-based statements and hypotheses made by professional scientists, who are not experts in epidemics or related research fields, have gained popularity in social media and mass media. While recalling that population ecology has accumulated knowledge that contributes to EBPM in the field of pest control, etc., we hope that the conference will provide an opportunity to exchange opinions on the relationship between science and society and the future development of population biology.

In addition, in order to enhance the sustainability of "research groups" regardless of the size of the research field or the society, it is necessary to design mechanisms to maintain and promote the diversity of the members as soon as possible. Therefore, I would like to emphasize the importance of ensuring the diversity of organizers and speakers in symposia (symposia and organized sessions), which would characterize the society's direction. When proposing an organized session, please do not plan a session that consists only of tenured male faculty or researchers. Please try to avoid sessions in which the organizers and speakers are exclusively male. Diversity will be taken into account as much as possible in the symposia planned by the organizing committee, and we are considering quantifying and visualizing diversity using the Hill number (effective species number).

We are planning two symposia for the conference. In "Toward challenging new materials (tentative)", we are planning to share the know-how of experimental and research methods that cannot be easily learned only from papers and textbooks. In "Socio-ecological system surrounding river migratory fishes (tentative)", we are planning to introduce the factors that cause river droughts and their impact on riverine organisms.

In addition to the above symposia planned by the conference organizing committee, “organized sessions” can be proposed. We invite not only members of the Society of Population Ecology but also non-members who are interested in population ecology and related fields to submit proposals for the organized sessions. For details, please refer to the Call for Proposals on the web page of this conference, which will be open soon.

In Ryukoku University, there is only one member of the Society of Population Ecology. The organizing committee of this conference is composed of one member (Dr. Takeshi Miki, Ryukoku University) and one secretariat (Ms. Ai Matsuda, Ryukoku University). We hope that this will serve as a test case for labor saving in future conference management. The management of conventions in small-scale societies is usually a heavy burden on the executive committee, so this will be a challenge to reduce the labor required for the management of conventions in the future. We understand that we may not be able to provide detailed services, and that we may have to decline to provide individual services, but we would appreciate your cooperation.
