Lifecycle management at [onlineschool.com] sends assignment reminders and important student correspondence outside of where learning occurs, in a channel that many students do not engage with.
The staff sends email outreach containing errors and at incorrect times, leading students to shut off the channel altogether.
Marketing does not sufficiently educate prospective students on the course load significance at sign-up.
Admissions does not screen for sufficient foundational knowledge or English Language literacy prior to the start of all coursework.
Abstract
Online learning is a space brimming with potential in the growing field of education accessibility. From a sociological lens, it seems to fill an enormous gap around upward mobility in our developing world. The last five years have exploded this sector of research, and yet, enabling strong student outcomes in remote, asynchronous settings is a challenge. The modern-day presents hundreds of competing digital stimuli for students. How do online course administrators push through those voices and support their learners?
In this study, we identify one example of a “problematic practice” contributing to low outcomes in digital learning spaces. Primarily, we focused on the tool utilized by administrators to engage and retain students. As outlined above, this research seeks to determine how to effectively communicate course expectations to students, and how to ensure they see that communication in a timely, seamless manner. As the research shared in “Concepts & Literature” would indicate, the key lies in where and how course communications are relayed. Proximity, timeliness, and accuracy all contribute to more meaningful engagement, and the solutions that follow.
