We all know first impressions are important. Some hotels have space to spare in their lobbies, where designers have the opportunity to create beautiful environments without worrying about clutter or inefficiencies.

When it comes to meeting building codes for fire and safety, the enclosed elevator lobby has long been a popular choice. But what they provide in terms of safety can be overshadowed by their less-than-appealing aesthetic and price point.

Deployable smoke and fire containment curtains are used to effectively protect elevators during emergency situations. These curtains contain fire and smoke before they spread to larger areas of the building.

Smoke Guard offers hotel owners several options for elevator smoke and fire protection, without the need to enclose the entire elevator lobby. Not only does a Smoke Guard elevator curtain save hotel owners valuable square footage, but can save them money as well. Without the need for a large lobby, the area can be used for additional guest rooms or functional spaces.

Designers have found solutions for overcrowded front desk areas in the form of pods. Individual front desk pods a much more efficient use of lobby space. Instead of having one large, long front desk, having these separate (often mobile) pods helps free up space that would have otherwise been wasted.

How about a comfortable Afternoon Tea or champagne in the unique hotel lobby, fine cigars with friends in our stylish Smokers' Lounge or a few drinks in the new Kronenhof Bar - great places to relax and socialise.

No one was injured after a fire caused damage in the lobby of the Bush Hotel on December 2. The Fire Department responded around 5:30 p.m. Fire Department Investigators found the fire was intentionally set, and notified the Police Department, according to a department spokesperson.

Dev Kabanela took a break from working late in the Bush Hotel building to run errands in the neighborhood. When he returned, there was a heavy smoke smell, stairs in the building lobby were blackened.

We were at the New Otani in April 2007, and they did not allow smoking anywhere on the hotel property. Remember, if you smoke, the smoke has to go somewhere. And if you are on your balcony/lanai, it will drift to neighboring rooms. I believe there were some posts on these boards about rooms that allow smoking-maybe at a condo?

I was in (ta && ta.queueForLoad ? ta.queueForLoad : function(f, g){document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', f);})(function(){ta.trackEventOnPage('postLinkInline', 'impression', 'postLinks-7757503', '');}, 'log_autolink_impression');Honolulu in November when the new smoking rule came into force. It was headlines in the papers and on the television news bulletins. I understand its forbidden on all hotel balconies. My travelling companions are smokers and were horrified at the ban, although it didn't stop them having their hourly puff! Could be a good excuse to give it up and get healthy on your holiday and surprise your family and/or friends at home. Whatever way, you'll have fun.

Kaanapali Beach Hotel says they have some smoking rooms on various floors in certain bldgs at their hotel. We are staying there in March and I have spoken to them about this. You CANNOT smoke in any rooms. If you have a so called smoking room, that means ONLY on the lanai. They did not offer this information when I called initially to make a reservation. I found this out elsewhere and then called them to verify it.
