Some of us headed off to Hobart, Tasmania for the Australian Entomology Society conference in November! Anh, Zach, Georgina, Darshika and Darsh all presented talks on their research and enjoyed networking with entomologists from all over the country and beyond. The weather in Hobart was often lovely and this city has a lot to offer in terms of excellent food and wonderful insects!
Several of our lab members converged upon Kyoto in Japan in August for the International Congress of Entomology, and Casey, Sabrina, Darshika and Georgina all came away with presentation awards! Such a great event to be a part of and we're all looking forward to seeing what new collaborations come out of meeting so many amazing global entomologists!
Here we all in the PC2 Insectary in our science fashion! The Eco-Immunology Lab had an epic and productive 2023 - wishing you the same for 2024!
We were so excited to have three members of the Biosecurity and Food Safety Diagnostics team from the DPI EMAI come to visit our lab this week! We had a big morning tea and a chat to start with and then showed Mark, Belinda and Khushbu the PC2 labs and the bee yard to explain what research our lab is currently undertaking. We're hoping that these kind of connections will open up future collaborations between groups. Come again soon, DPI friends!
Theo explains some of his current honey bee research to our DPI EMAI visitors
We really enjoyed regaling our DPI EMAI visitors with lab stories
Several lab members presented at this year's Sydney Bee Day, held at the University of Sydney.
Casey presents some of her PhD work on the effects of pesticides and antibiotics on bee gut microbiome at Sydney Bee Day 2023
Darsh presents the Bee Probiotic Project at Sydney Bee Day 2023, along with his previous work on pathogen transmission at the N.T. DPI
Vanessa presents her work on bee bacteria - both gut microbiota and environmental at Sydney Bee Day 2023
We hosted the MQ Behavioural Ecology Lab and spent some time discussing our skill sets with each other in the hopes that we could open up some future collaborations - and there was lots of yum cake! If your lab would like to have one of these combined meetings with us, get in touch.
One of Casey's projects is to determine how the use of common garden pesticides affects bee cognition and behaviour. In this image, she is prepping treatments for an upcoming experiment.
In this experiment, honey bees are gently harnessed in to test their behavioural reactions to various substances. Here are two bees being tested to determine their reaction to a glucose solution - one is sticking out its proboscis - a positive reaction!
