Point-and-click puzzle game
Final for Puzzle Design (taken during Term 4)
Inspired by a loved one's ongoing battle with mental health and depression
My closing thoughts: Most of my puzzles were not challenging nor polished enough to create that satisfying reaction from players where they feel smart and like they accomplished something of worth. The puzzle design class was super awesome though -- Tommy Honton is a great teacher!
Arcade-style ARPG
First half = maze and powerup time
Second = defeat the boss
Created as part of a "Fun to Speedrun" game jam during the Term 4 Game Production class
My closing thoughts: I enjoyed seeing the reactions that players had when they first encountered the in-game sprites and sound effects. When I was able to get the leaderboard up and running, I did notice players getting much more competitive and into the game. Some players would refresh before encountering the boss to restart while still in the maze section if they felt they had "bad RNG" and could have completed the course faster.
Physics-based punishing adventure "gag" game inspired by Bennet Foddy's getting over it
Final for Term 2 Game Production Class
My closing thoughts: As a game designer, why am I trying to make a game that will annoy and frustrate the players? My passion is to create a fictional world so immersive that players can feel themselves melting into it. I want to challenge the divide between fact and fiction. I did enjoy seeing playtesters reactions to the art upon intial loadup of the game.
Making during Term 2 for "Keyboard Jam" assignment
Tried to incorporate a simple storyline despite the gameloop being so short
My closing thoughts: I had a lot of fun imagining and writing up the short storyline for this game. I think the most awesome games have a good balance of immersive storylines with strong feeling of player input. Like a tactile experience where you can "melt" into the world and really embody the game feeling -- of course, successful execution of this is way easier said than done.
Arcade-style defense and shooting game
Final for Term 1 Game Production class
Homage to late childhood dog
My closing thoughts: I enjoy the bubbly atmosphere I created for the game with the hand-drawn sprites, animations, and music-- but I feel the game is lacking in creativity when it comes to mechanics and any potential story/plot. Since it was meant to be a homage to my beloved late pet, perhaps a more narrative heavy game would have been more appropiate.
