Hello, next we (mom, 2 teens and a tween) are taking the train from Rome to Naples/then on to Pompeii for day. Do we just show up and buy tickets at a main entrance. And I am correct, that some options are hiring a private guide or downloading the RS podcast? If we hire the private guide, do they expect cash or take cards? What's a decent rate?

I really have no idea what to expect, but I'll be with my 3 sons and trying to get an idea what I should plan out for the visit there. Do you have the option to buy audio guide devices there?

I always showed up and bought the tickets at the entrance. No reservations needed.

Others will chime in about guides since I never used them. Regarding the credit cards, I don't know for a fact, but in Naples cash is king, especially for those kind of services. I hope you don't expect Neapolitans not to try to dodge taxes. They don't comply with most laws, let alone tax laws.

We were there in June. We used Rick Steve's audio guide. My husband and I both used our ear pods. We've used his audio guides many, many times and they never disappoint! I don't know how much your kids are in to history, but they will probably just want to see it as they walk. We saw a few people with guides, if you go that route I would arrange it in advance. But my advice would be, the RS audio guide for you - and fill your kids in on the important details.

The rick steves audio guide is very good, just be aware that they have changed the route a bit, so the path it wants you to take may not be the way things are set up now (could also be I had an old version on my phone).

They (the Pompeii site) also, at least for a time eliminated the audio guide, opting instead for a downloadable version for your phone. You can download it now (recommended) by going to the Apple store or Google Play, it is called "My Pompeii". I am not sure how much data is required to use it as you go, in case you do not have data coverage there, but it has all kinds of info, and covers many more things than the RS App.

The combination of the two should give you a substantial overview of the place without a private guide. One thing I do, is listen to the audio guide and browse any app before going (as well as other reading and exploring), so when I am there, I already have a good overview of the site, then the audio guide is really just extra detail, I am not overwhelmed with information.

We usually guide ourselves like several people have suggested. However, last May we spent the day at Pompeii with a Walks of Italy tour. Our tour guide was Sonia from Naples and there were only five us on the small group three -hour tour. We met Sonia at the Pompeii gate after taking the Circumvesuviana train from Naples. We are so glad we did the tour. Sonia brought Pompeii alive and made it so much more meaningful. After the three hours we stayed to explore on our own for another two hours. She gave us some suggestions on where to go. We had done a lot of reading about Pompeii beforehand but would definitely go on a tour again if we go there again.

Walks of Italy offers a Skip the Line Best of Pompeii Tour, on which their expert archaeologist will guide your small group to the best sights and tell you all about what they are. This is a really good Pompeii walking tour for those not wanting to decipher a map.

We are coming over for a European holiday from Australia and Pompeii is on our to do list in November. Do we just pay the entry when we get there or do you have to pre book entry tickets for a self guided tour. We have zero interest in being on any kind of tour anywhere as we also prefer to do our own thing. Any help would be appreciated ?

It has been recommended that we book on-line entrance and the audio-guide, but I was wondering it this is absolutely necessary. There are a number of different sites with different prices for on-line tickets, with or without audio-guide so it is confusing which to use.

I actually really liked the app. For those of you still shopping, it is part map, part audio guide, and part guide book. The mapping portion worked both on and offline, so that you could take a look regardless of whether you could use mobile data. The app has itineraries based on time (so you select the 2 or 4 hr tours), or you can create your own itinerary by picking and choosing structures. When you select a building, you can then read about it, or have the app read the information to you like an audio guide.

On the positive, there were a few buildings that were not available on the official guide and map that were described in the app, such as the garum workshop. This additional information was fantastic, particularly as it mostly pertained to lower status structures and daily life in Pompeii, whereas the official guides tend to focus on the higher status structures.

This is a small problem in what is otherwise an excellent app. I hope that they continue to develop it, adding descriptions of more of the buildings available on the official guides and maps. I also hope they fix the problem of the audio shutting off when the screen shuts off!

You can hire guides that hang around the ticket desks. Quality is variable (as are visitors requirements) so do spend some time talking to the guide before you commit, at least be comfortable you can understand what they are saying.

For most independent visitors who want information about what they are seeing (recommended) the audio tours seem to be the most popular guide. You hire them at a separate kiosk by the admissions desk.

Listen to fascinating stories, based on an award-winning storytelling concept, and gain great insights into the most iconic landmark of Santorini. Start your tour from the sheltered site where you can listen to the stories about how Akrotiri was discovered, and then continue to explore its interior learning about the rise and the fall of one of the most important prehistoric settlements not only in the Aegean, but also in the world. This is an unmissable opportunity to experience at your own pace the Akrotiri with a captivating audio tour on your phone.

There is no meeting point. The self-guided audio tour is designed to start at the entrance of the archaeological site of Akrotiri which is located south of the modern village that bears the same name. The easiest way to get there is by car or by bus. Once you stop at the car park at the Akrotiri Red Beach, you get the road that takes you to the archaeological site. The tour ends inside the archaeological site.

You can enjoy each multilingual tour by using your smartphone or tablet at your own pace even if you are offline. The interactive map on your screen will guide you step-by-step as you explore all points of interest along your route. Each stop comes with a selection of our signature stories allowing you to tailor the tour experience to your personal interests and schedule.

After downloading Clio Muse Tours app, you can access this tour and activate it any moment you wish and also repeat it any time. To best enjoy our multimedia self-guided tour (comprising maps, video, audio and text) we recommend the use of headphones.

With its wealth of information it will excort you through the ruins of ancient civilizations brought back to life for you, providing you with all the necessary means to appreciate their memory and the most curious nuances. From April 1 to October 31, the entire site is open from 9am-7pm. From November 1-March 31, the site is open from 9am-5pm.
