Halo! Nama saya (I am) Krizza Mae Raposas Pomares. A fourth year Bachelor of Secondary Education student, majoring in science and one of the participants of the 10th batch Southeast Asian Teachers program from University of Northern Philippines.
Why did I consider joining the SEA-Teacher program?
To improve my teaching pedagogy in teaching science as a pre-service teacher.
To enhance my English-speaking skill in teaching.
To explore and experience a diverse-classroom cultural learning and teaching setting.
Situated in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia, Universitas Pakuan is known for being the "Akreditasi Unggul" or the highest accreditation given by the Ministry of Education. Its facilities and building infrastructures are exceptional serving the students with great learning experiences in a nice setting. Also, its location is very strategic being closed to the toll road which is located in the center of Bogor City. In addition, UNPAK is one of the prestigious and the best private universities in Bogor.
As one of the SEA Teachers deployed in this school, I am so grateful for the experiences and knowledge they have shared. They offered us Bahasa Language and Indonesian Culture classes every Fridays which made our 28-stay in Indonesia easier and more comfortable.

Universitas Pakuan offered us to have a Bahasa Learning Class with Ibu Leora. We learned how to introduce ourselves in their language, as well as the basic words- useful for our everyday living in Indonesia, and some terms for describing the tastes of snacks.
Learning about the background of Bogor is essential, as it served as our stepping stone when living there. With the help of Bapak Taufik, we learned that Bogor is known for its rich environment. Also, with the help of Salsa, we experienced dancing Jaipong.
Their famous clothing is Batik; it is included as part of learning Indonesian culture. We visited Batik Bogor Tradisiku together with our buddies, where we learned the patterns and the process in making batik.
"Building a Quality, Professional and Character Generation". SMA Kesatuan is known for their Accreditation A (Excellent), Child Friendly School, and also for Healthy, Clean and Halal School Canteen. One of the leading Senior High School in Bogor City with the implementation of a continuous learning system which is fundamental for the students' learning processes. It is founded in 1965, implementing discipline in learning, respecting time and respecting parents & teachers.
SMA Kesatuan has a lot of facilities which can facilitate all of the students. Some of these facilities are:
Biology Laboratory

Library
UKS (General & Dental)
Multipurpose Room
Since I was deployed to the Senior High School faculty, I am so grateful for their hospitality and patience during my stay. The faculty are gathering at 6:30 AM for their morning session, which is reading their prayer as well, visions and missions as well as announcing of information. During my observation and teaching demonstration, we usually start at 7:30 AM up to 12:00 PM. And in my assisted summative which lasted for two weeks depends on the schedule of the teacher given by the head teacher at the senior high school department.
Inside the four corners of the faculty room, I felt so accepted by them. They always offer me foods and let me try some Indonesian snacks such as Nasi Kuning, Gorengan, Bihun Pangsit and others. My stay in Sekolah Kesatuan was worthwhile because of them, who took care and guided me throughout my SEA teacher journey.
Sekolah Kesatuan is equipped with a library full of books (some are in Bahasa texts and some are bilingual), a reading corner, as well as a bicorner, tables and chairs that is enough in accommodating students.
They also have a lot of books in science, may it be in Kimia (Chemistry), Fisika (Physics), Biology and other textbooks. My supervisor also gave me an electronic book in organic chemistry as a basis in developing my Inquiry-based learning kit as well as in the delivery of my practicum.
In planning for my lesson in Alcohols, I utilized the same approach we usually practiced in our program. I asked my supervisor if I can deliver my practicum using an inquiry-based learning and teaching approach. This Aligned Classroom Instruction Design (ACID) Plan was used in order to visualize the alignment of the activities in each segment to the learning competency.
One of my struggles when I am preparing for my practicum is developing an instructional material appropriate to the learning competency. Fortunately, I was able to experience developing a series of inquiry-based learning kit in my 3rd year college days and had my practice on my lesson implementations. Indeed, our program in our university equipped us the skills not just in making an instructional material but also how to deliver the lesson appropriately.
A lesson plan serves as the backbone of a teacher when it comes to the delivery of the lesson. My instructional plan is composed of seven (7) segments bombarded with a series of inquiry questions which was designed in my inquiry-based learning kit. In this way, I was able to familiarize the flow of my practicum. However, there are some adjustments due to some inconvenience. At last, I was able to deliver my lesson using these three plans successfully with the help of my students who were so active and cooperative.
This is my ACID Plan in teaching Carboxylic Acids. I prepared this in order to see the alignment of the activities within five (5) segments.
Same with my previous practicum, I prepared an inquiry-based learning kit which served as my instructional material in teaching my students the concepts of Carboxylic Acids.
Also, the instructional plan I have prepared was aligned to the ACID Plan and the inquiry-based learning kit. This served as my blueprint and backbone in my practicum.
1st Observation
2nd Observation
3rd Observation
4th Observation
During my first week in Sekolah Kesatuan, I was able to observe my supervisor as well as deliver my lessons. In the next weeks (November 25 to December 5), they were scheduled to administer the assessments. I was not able to capture some pictures during their assessment because we are not allowed to take our cellphones with us during their exams. As my observations, the supervisors strictly administered the exams through, (1) Collecting their cellphones before starting the exam, (2) Shuffling the students (Grade 12 and Grade 10) were mixed in one room, (3) They provided two types of exams (Type A & Type B), (4) Before the start of the exam, the supervisor needs to check their uniforms which includes their badges and socks, and also their name tags. (5) Extra papers are not allowed. Extra sheets will be given by the supervisor. With my supervisor, I accompanied a total of eight (8) assessment classes. They are given two (2) hours in answering and finalizing their tests. Also, their exam includes multiple-choice items, enumerations as well as essays.
The time alloted for their Chemistry subject is 1 hour and 20 minutes. I used the 7E methods of Inquiry approach in teaching them alcohols. It includes seven (7) segments with series of inquiry questions and activities related to the topic.
There were seven (7) segments during my practicum on Alcohols;
Elicit: Unscrambling the terms.
Engage: Using vignette story in introducing the concept of Alcohols.
Explore: DryLab- Recognizing Alcohols.
Explain: Differentiating a primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols.
Elaborate: Determining the types of alcohols and writing their structural formulas & Chemical Reactions involving alcohols.
Evaluate: Tow-tiered Multiple-Choice Test
Extend: Infographics on Alcohols
In terms of classroom management, the students were behaving and responsible during my practicum. Since I was new to them, they were hesitant in answering my inquiry questions at first. Fortunately, they gained their confidence in reciting and raised their hands as I presented them the activities I've prepared.
On the first segment of my lesson, the students confidently shouted their answers to the jumbled terms connected to the lesson, Alcohols. The second segment which was the Vignette story raised their curiosity about the topic making them more focused and interested as they want to know the answer to my primary inquiry question, "Why is Isopropyl Alcohols being used in cleaning wounds?" on alcohols and "Why do ants' bites itch so much?". However, during the explore segment, they were not able to use the PHET Simulation due to the reason that their phones were prohibited to use their gadgets during their class hours every day which will somehow guide them in answering the needed data table. Fortunately, I came prepared. We utilized the saved pictures of the ball & sticks models in order for them to determine the number of Carbon, Hydrogen and oxygen found on the given alcohol and carboxylic compounds. Using the scaffoldings on the explain segments, they were able to answer and process the data table using the inquiry questions I have prepared. Also, to add more of their knowledge regarding Alcohols and Carboxylic acid, I prepared activities such as Identifying the types of Alcohols, Determining whether the given organic compounds are carboxylic acid or not, as well as the chemical reactions involved in Alcohols and Carboxylic acid. Lastly, the most important part was the evaluation. Fortunately, the results of their short quizzes were high which means that the material I have developed, and my practicum were effective.
The video above shows my 2nd and 3rd practicum with the topic, Carboxylic Acid. I followed the 5E inquiry approach involving Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. Just like my two previous practicums, the students were quite active and cooperative.
My procedure in teaching them carboxylic acid goes like this:
Engage: Vignette story. introducing carboxylic acid.
Explore: DryLab: Recognizing Carboxylic Acid.
Explain: Explaining the components of Carboxylic Acid
Elaborate: Identifying carboxylic acid compounds & performing chemical reactions involved in Carboxylic Acid.
Evaluate: A multiple-choice test on Carboxylic Acids.
Bogor City is known for having environmental conservation sites. During our stay, we visited two Kebun Rayas, (1) Botanical Garden in Central Bogor, and; (2) Kebun Raya Cibodas.
Botanical Garden
This place is operated by the National research and Innovation Agency. It is located in the central Bogor where the presidential palace is placed to. It is full of old trees, cactuses, flowers, and other plants which originated from various of country. One thing I love about this place is how they keep the site clean as well as how they conserved plants.
Kebun Raya Cibodas
Together with Ibu Lili and the 1st semester Biology students from UNPAK, we visited the Cibodas for their practicum. Since their approach in teaching Biology is Problem-based, they needed to explore the place to find variety of Lichens, Mushrooms, and mosses. They use google lens in identifying the type and genus of the said microorganisms. One thing I remember from Ibu Lili was, "The more types of lichens, mushrooms and mosses we find here, means the healthier the environment is."
