announcement

Dear members of the LMS Academy,

On behalf of the LMS Academy, it gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of Ms. Maeve LIU Shutong as the new President of the LMS Academy.  She is taking over the reins whilst the former President Ms. Karina Maussymbayeva graduated and started working this August. Ms. Maeve LIU is assisting me as my TA in the LMS department and hails from Dalian, China.

She says:

“I am very honoured and deeply thankful to be appointed as the new President of the LMS Academy.

As we embark on this journey together, I would like to share a significant experience that has profoundly shaped my perspective on our shared mission.

This past July I joined PolyU’s international summer school program at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. The journey and experience were in a word ‘remarkable’.

The programme brought together the vast experiences of professors and their individual expertise from prestigious universities worldwide. The incredible students, staff, and professors at both PolyU and the University of Ljubljana played a crucial role in making our experiences so successful and forever etched in our memories. This was invaluable for all of us.

The University arranged comfortable accommodations and generously provided all 70 students with free access to city buses that facilitated our exploration of the many enchanting cities in Slovenia. This immersion allowed us to deeply connect with Slovenia’s culture and history.

Participating in this program provided me (as well as others) with an incredible opportunity to exchange perspectives and experiences with individuals from across the globe. The highly interactive atmosphere fostered not only my academic growth but also my personal development.

After a month’s reflection, I realize that personal development extends far beyond the confines of textbooks or classrooms. It is forged through the connections we establish, the ideas we share, and the experiences we accumulate along the way.

I cannot express enough the profound gratitude I have for all. The meticulous planning, thought, and effort invested in ensuring our comfort and enriching our learning experience makes me feel very fortunate. I am very thankful.

As I take on the role of President of the LMS Academy, I am committed to bringing the spirit of international collaboration and thought leadership to our academy. Our mission, encapsulated in the concept of "Thinking Exponentially," will guide us as we strive to develop quality thinking skills, and engage in meaningful discussions with each other.

I look forward to working closely with all of you to nurture ourselves as thinkers and leaders. Together, we will create a learning environment that fosters the growth of us.”

Ms. Maeve will assume duty with immediate effect on 14th September 2023.

New president announcement

On behalf of the LMS Academy, it gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of Ms. Karina Maussymbayeva as the new President of the LMS Academy.  She is taking over the reins whilst the former President Ms. Ming Yi HOO is abroad on ‘Exchange’ for the semester.  Ms. Karina is in her senior year in LMS department and hails from Kazakhstan.

She says:

“The first thing I would like to say is that I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to become LMS Academy President!

In order to explain my personality and motivation to be a president of LMS academy, I need to go back in time to 7 years old girl who just began dancing as a professional. It may sound ridiculous, but this was exactly the period of my life where I learnt discipline, consistency and how to be ambitious. For a kid, it was so easy to just give up daily trainings, strict diets and physical exhaustion. However, I never did, and this experience is fundamental in me becoming the person I am right now.

As a president, I will make sure that LMS academy will be the same space for improvement, growth and learning for everyone who wishes to join us.”

Ms. Karina will assume duty with immediate effect on this the 22nd day of February, 2023.

Sharing from home and youth affairs bureau

On 11 February, Mr. Wallace Lau, the commissioner of the Youth Development Bureau was invited to speak and have a sharing at PolyU. The sharing session was about the "Blueprint for Youth Development" recently released by the Youth Development Bureau. During the session, Mr. Lau joined hands with our Academy advisor, Professor Dewey Yee, to explain the potential of the logistics and shipping industry. 80 postgraduates from the LMS Department were given a lot of insightful information on the future development of Hong Kong as an international shipping and international aviation hub to explore about their future employment and job opportunities.

Coffee Chat

In October, LMS Academy gathered at PolyU Cafe. The meeting was informal but insightful. The chat started with a question raised by Prof. Dewey that most of the members have never thought about, “what is the difference between empathy and sympathy?” Members taking turn to exchange their opinions, having a enlightening discussion. The second topic was about the current challenges members were facing in our life. The purpose was to improve our problem-solving skills by reflecting on what we had planned to tackle the problem. Prof. Dewey listened to each member’s story carefully and empathetically. Prof. Dewey's feedback on other members' challenges gave them a new perspective on their personal challenges, such as fear of public speaking and poor time management.

Members' Feedback

What I have learned from LMS Academy

LMS Academy is a unique group among all the clubs and associations that I have joined in high school and university. In every meeting, the topic is related to personalized focused learning which I think is the most effective way to improve my thinking skills and communication skills. Through sharing my personal challenges with others, I learned how to describe a story effectively to others.  When I listened to other members sharing, I realized that I can learn lot from their problem solving skills such as different perspectives. The most important thing I learned at LMS Academy is that whether I am a student or graduate, I always need to continue learning because I still have a long way to go to advance my critical thinking skills and communication skills.   - Elaine Yang
