Moksha nominal morphosyntax

Currently, I am working on an analysis of Moksha nominal morphosyntax. I argue that not all noun phrases in Moksha have all nominal projections up to DP; some nominals are of smaller size. I show that this distinction is highlighted by Moksha nominal morphology. This theoretical analysis also helps to capture very puzzling morphological patterns found in Moksha. This project consists of two main parts: syntax of genitive phrases and syntax of locative expressions. I have been doing research on Moksha nominal morphosyntax for seven years, ever since my first fieldtrip. I have presented some of these ideas in my BA and MA theses (in addition to multiple talks), as well as in a chapter of the grammar of Moksha, that my colleagues and I wrote as part of our fieldwork project.

Kaqchikel book of recipes and stories of life

Together with Irina Burukina, we are preparing a book with recipes and stories of life related in Kaqchikel. We interviewd women that live in Patzún (Guatemala) about their favorite recipes. Also, we talked to people of different professions (teachers, doctors, priests, sellers, housewives) about their lives in Patzún. All the texts are in Kaqchikel, some of them have oral Spanish translations as well. With help of native speakers, we are working on transcription of these texts. Then all texts are being glossed. The recipes and some stories of life will be published as a book with Spanish and English translations. All the texts will be also available as a spoken corpus of Kaqchikel.

Hill Mari nominal morphosyntax

I have been studying noun phrase structure in Hill Mari, as a part of the MSU field project on Hill Mari. I coordinated the work of all participants whose research topics were related to nominal morphosyntax. Alongside with nominal dependents, their properties, word order and mutual compatibility, I studied differential object marking in non-finite clauses, which is crucial for understanding hierarchical structure of Hill Mari noun phrases. I also worked on constructions with sententional arguments. Most of them are non-finite, and I am working on an analysis of differential subject marking in non-finite clauses in Hill Mari, which will help to reveal some properties of genitive constructions. My ideas on Hill Mari morphosyntax were presented in my BA and MA theses, as well as in multiple talks. Now, I am working on corresponding chapters of the grammar thet is created as the result of the project.

Kaqchikel nominal morphosyntax

In contrast to verbal morphosyntax and information structure, Kaqchikel nominal morphosynax was not considered "interesting" enough and is understudied by formal linguists. However, it has an interesting usage of a diminutive marker as a plural marker, which I describe in this article. Moreover, it is known that Mayan languages are Head-marking languages, so I was excited when I found a Dependent-marking strategy for possessive constructions in addition to a Head-marking one. Here is my talk about it. Now, I am concentrating on incompatibility of definiteness marking and local prepositions in Kaqchikel.

Moksha-Russian code-switching

Moksha and Russian are typologically genetically very different. However, a long hystory of contact between the two languages has led to substantial changes in Moksha, which results in code-switching patterns that would not be expected in such a different languages. My preliminary results are shown in this talk.
