Practical Information

Hotels:

The hotels we suggest are the following:

  • Slaviero Slim Avenida das Torres: around R$ 220/night, within walking distance from the university, Google map. Adress: Rua Deputado Miguel Buffara, 88 - Cep: 81520-090, Jardim das Américas. Tel: (41) 3040.2100
  • Dan Inn Hotel: around 140-170 R$/night, located down-town, Google Maps. Adress: R. Amintas de Barros, 71 - Centro. Can be booked in Booking.com.
  • Other hotel options can be found here.

From the airport, it is best to take a Uber/99 cab, it coast around R$ 35 (to get in both hotels). You can also take Bus nº 208 from the tube (on the far right as you exit the airport terminal), for R$ 4.50. It runs every 30 minutes, and in about 30 minutes it takes you to the stop "Circulo Militar", right next to hotel Dan Inn. Taxis from the airport to hotel Dan Inn cost around R$ 80.

Directions to the Workshop:

  • If you want to get from the airport directly to the Workshop site, the only reasonably quick options is to take either a Uber/99 or a taxi (ask to be taken to "Shopping Jardim das Americas", which should cost around R$ 35 by Uber/99, and around R$ 60 by Taxi).
  • The workshop site is within walking distance from the Slaviero Hotel (Here a hand).
  • You can get on "Centro Politecnico" from Hotel Dan Inn as follows: at "Estação Tubo Circulo Militar" take the Bus nº 469, and get off at bus stop "Estação Tubo Jardim das Américas". "Estação Tubo Circulo Militar" is located right next to the hotel (check it here: map). The Bus nº 469 is a silver-colored bus and you will have to catch it by entering one of the tubes. You can buy the ticket inside the tube for R$ 4.50. If you get to the tube by 9h you can catch the 9:05 bus that will reach the workshop location just before the first talk in the morning (on thursday). Here is the entire trajectory
  • You can also find other ways to get at Centro Politécnico (be creative, use google maps).

Tourism in Curitiba:

  • Museu Oscar Niemeyer: It is aways full of outstanding expositions (check out the outside). There is an entrance fee R$20 (I think teachers and students only pay R$10, due to some municipal law).
  • Botanical Garden of Curitiba: It is located 15 minutes walk from "Centro Politécnico" it is one of the main attractions of the City. Inside there is (between some other things) a small shop where you can buy a souvenir (or some seedlings, if you like). Here is a 360º picture of a place you will find there.
  • Parks on Curitiba: There are some amazing parks in Curitiba, most notably: "Parque Tanguá" and "Parque Barigui". If you don't want to go far, there is also "Passeio Público" located at "Centro", where there are many types of beautiful birds. If you going to "Parque Tanguá" you might want to go in the "opera de arame" (it is in the way).
  • Largo da Ordem (a.k.a. Lapa de Curitiba): Located at the Historic Center it hosts many interesting places (some museums, churches, cool bars, etc). On Sundays there is a huge fair called "Feira do Largo da Ordem", where you can by all sorts of handcrafted things as well as have a "pastel-de-feira".
  • Bar do Alemão: This is probably the best known bar in Curitiba. It is located in Largo da Ordem. It is a place where you can find food with German roots and all sorts of Brazilian food. Its most known drink is the "Submarino" (chopp with a small dose of cachaça that comes inside a small cup inside the chopp), you can keep the small cup as a souvenir.
  • Other Places: for some reason there is a huge concentrations of bars in the street "Rua Itupava" (might it be like "alto da gávea"? Maybe).
