Talk to someone now

For free, confidential support in Australia, call 1800 858 858 or visit Gambling Help Online ↗. Support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for people affected by gambling and their families or friends.

Keep gambling in perspective

Gambling involves uncertainty and the possibility of losing money. It is not a way to pay bills, recover debts or build reliable income. Understanding odds does not eliminate risk. This guide cannot assess your personal circumstances or replace professional support.

Set boundaries before you start

Protect money for rent, food, bills, savings and other essentials. Decide a spending limit and a time limit in advance. Use the provider's limit tools where available. Do not borrow to gamble or raise a limit in response to a loss. Take breaks and keep time for sleep, relationships, work and other interests. Avoid gambling while distressed or impaired by alcohol or other substances. If keeping to a limit is difficult, stop and consider stronger barriers or support.

Recognise signs of harm

Warning signs can include chasing losses, hiding spending, borrowing money, neglecting responsibilities, repeated attempts to stop that do not last, or using gambling to escape difficult feelings. Harm can affect wellbeing and relationships before a person recognises a financial crisis.

You do not need to wait for a serious problem to seek help. A counsellor can help you decide which steps fit your circumstances.

Take a break or self-exclude

BetStop — the National Self-Exclusion Register ↗ lets you exclude yourself from Australian licensed online and phone wagering providers in a single registration. Read the current information and register directly with BetStop. This guide cannot register or remove you.

BetStop covers licensed interactive wagering. For a land-based venue or other type of gambling, ask about the relevant local self-exclusion process. Consider blocking gambling websites, disabling promotional messages and talking with your bank about available gambling transaction blocks.

Support someone else

Listen without judgement. Encourage support and protect your own finances and wellbeing. Avoid covering gambling debts as a routine response. Gambling Help Online and the helpline can also assist family members, friends and carers.

Adults only and lawful services

This site is for people aged 18 or over. The hero notice is not formal age verification. Do not bypass operator checks or use another person's account. Check a service's exact identity and current licence before using it. If you have self-excluded, do not look for alternative operators or ways around the exclusion.
