June 1st Race Day #1

We had some company visit us.

Ten great sailors battled it out in some great racing action.  The results are below.

Regatta Report for 1 June 2024.  Race Day #1 of the NMMYC DF65 Championship Series.

The first leg of the Northern Maryland Model Yacht Club Championship Series was held at our beautiful Lake Whittier on June 1, 2024. The weather was nearly perfect with sunny skies, comfortable temps, and light winds out of the east. The race course was set with offset marks to windward and a gate to leeward of the start/finish line. Ten skippers, including last year’s champion and a few new faces, set out to battle for points.

Mike C. showed up in great form and sailed on to win the first race. He remained fairly hot taking 2nd in the next three races. While Alan, Kyle, and DJ each took a first place in those races. Winds remained light but mostly steady during the morning session. We only had a couple of lulls that stopped boats briefly, and those with patience soon found the wind filling in around them. We took a break after the 4th race, and skippers shared strategies and tuning tips for sailing in light air.

The second half of race day began with Bart taking his first ace of the competition. However, Mike returned to his winning ways in race 6 and 7. He took no worse than 2nd the entire day. His sailing put him in great shape to defend his championship in the remainder of the series.

Meanwhile, several of our skippers had personal best finishes in the afternoon session. Unfortunately, Mahi struggled with gremlins for a second year in a row and was out of control for portions of 2 races. I imagine Bart will be trying to make up for that next month.

Final scores are posted on NMMYC’s website.

Congratulations to all who participated. I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday, July 6th.
