This is my "In-Tents Vacations" page, containing a selection of poems written about places we've visited while on our annual camping holidays. I try to capture the experiences, the atmosphere and the occasional negative aspect in as humorous style as is possible. [Sadly, I will be not adding any further content to this page, but the saga continues on the page "Getting Hitched."]

The inspiration; for our Spring holiday in 2024, we headed to the Somerset town of Weston-Super-Mare, somewhere which I had not visited previously.
We had opted to select a campsite which had somewhat more facilities on site than what we are used to, and we were fortunate that this also provided us with a wide range of choices for food locally, including a restaurant across the road from the camp, an Indian restaurant a short walk and a good old English Chippie just a short drive away.
The weather was quite a mix during the 6 days we were there but we did manage to make the most of a couple of days of warm sunshine to explore the local area, much to our pleasure.

The inspiration; it has become something of a tradition that whenever my partner Helen and I go away on one of our many camping trips, I usually celebrate it by writing something humorous but telling the story of our time at whichever location we happen to be staying in.
In the case of this, which was the first poem I penned on this topic, it was telling the story of our vacation to Lands End in Cornwall, or more specifically, the amazing rural village of St Buryan.
I had visited this area of Cornwall some 20 years earlier so it was something of a nostalgia trip for me whilst also getting the opportunity to revisit some old memories of my previous time there.

The inspiration; For this vacation, we headed to the beautiful South Wales town of Abergavenny, or a few miles North of it at least.
A very pleasant campsite located behind a recently refurbished pub & restaurant. The fact that there wasn't much else in the village other than a shop based in a backstreet garage, and just one other supposedly haunted pub which seemed to be closed for most of the time we were there, gave us plenty of excuse to go off exploring, including a trip to the city of Hereford and even a day on the beach in Gavin & Stacey Land, aka Barry Island.
I believe this poem captures many aspects of our stay and is probably one of my personal favourites, certainly from a creative aspect.

As all will become clear, this will be the last entry in this section.
The inspiration; over the last few years as a camping couple, we've fallen in love with the amazing landscape offered by the South West of England, namely the counties of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. So it's no surprise that for our Summer getaway this year, we decided to head back down there to a site just outside St Austell. This is an area new to me although Helen has visited previously.
Alas, we fell victim to a number of factors on this vacation which showed the area in a very different way. I believe this poem will detail these shortcomings in more detail. Let's just say we've learnt a valuable lesson...

Yes, you did read that correctly, written some time ago, during a different phase of my life.
The inspiration; other than the fact that this is probably one of my earliest creations, dating back to 2014, I don't really have much in the way of recollection as to the finer details of this, other than it did involve a holiday which may well have been under canvas, and where the conditions were typical of any other UK holiday.
The strange thing for me is that this appeared on my Facebook page as a memory, but one which I had completely forgotten about. Seems a shame not to make use of it, right?? (Pretty certain it's mine!!)
