In modern agriculture, effective storage systems are crucial to preserving the quality and longevity of harvested crops, particularly grains, and ensuring a smooth supply chain from harvest to consumption. One such structure is the warehouse for bag-type storage of grains, a widely used method of grain storage. Its primary role is to provide a safe, organized environment for storing grains in bags, protecting them from spoilage, pests, and environmental factors. This helps maintain their quality and extends their shelf life until they are ready for processing or sale.
This evaluation focuses on the National Food Authority (NFA), a Philippine government agency under the Department of Agriculture, which is responsible for ensuring food security in the Philippines and stabilizing the supply and price of rice. The NFA facility is located in Gov. Ramos, San Roque, Zamboanga City. The objective of this visit was to assess the facility's warehouse for bag-type grain storage. This evaluation was conducted in accordance with the Philippine National Standard for Agricultural Structures, specifically focusing on warehouses designed for bag-type grain storage.
The evaluation aimed to examine the design, functionality, and operational efficiency of the warehouse, with particular emphasis on how it supports the safe storage and preservation of grains. Key areas of assessment included the warehouse's location, functional and structural requirements, as well as its management practices. By using Philippine national standards/Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standard 419:2015 as a guideline, the goal was to gain valuable insights into the warehouse’s effectiveness in preserving grain quality.
