Corona Update, pt. 2

Our 8th grade team has decided to utilize the Schoology platform for our Virtual Learning Days. We did our best today to setup accounts, train students, and explain expectations throughout today. For those families whose student was unable to participate today, please CONTACT US immediately so we can help set up your student for all of their academic classes. jeffrey.hofmeister@cobbk12.org or olivia.mcevilly@cobbk12.org.

Corona Update

If you are not aware, Cobb Schools are closed beginning Monday, May 16th.

We are, therefore, beginning Virtual Pine Mountain lessons on Monday. For our students to be successful, communication between home and teacher is going to be crucial. If any parents do NOT receive our email blasts, please let us know immediately at jeffrey.hofmeister@cobbk12.org or olivia.mcevilly@cobbk12.org.

By 9:00 AM each weekday, the Learning Target and Lesson Plan will be posted here on the blog with links to student learning opportunities and assignments. All teachers will also provide "Office Hours" for responding to student questions virtually. These hours will be Monday-Friday at 10:30AM-12:00PM.

We will soon communicate what digital tools we will be using to guarantee our students continue to receive high quality education while we are away from school. Thank you for all you will be doing over this difficult time, and we hope that everyone in our PMMS community remains healthy and safe!

March 9th-13th

4 weeks to go until the Milestones!

A full moon and Friday the 13th in the same week.... what could go wrong :)

AC Social Studies notes:

Our Portfolio project has been on-going for 3+ weeks now. Because of the end of the Q3 grading period, projects need to be turned in ASAP. Though the first tasks aren't due until this Friday, the earlier they're turned in, the less suspense of what the final Q3 grade will be.

This week in 8th grade:

We continue our study of Georgia government systems by focusing on the Legislative branch. We will discuss the role and structure of the General Assembly and focus heavily on the process of How A Bill Becomes A Law. That means, we get to watch everyone's favorite SS video: I'm Just A Bill!!!

Our learning targets this week seek for understanding:

  • The role of the executive branch in GA.
  • Qualifications for Governor and Lt. Governor.
  • The purpose of the state agencies.
  • The dual role of the judicial branch in GA in administering justice and interpreting laws.
  • The difference between civil and criminal law.

The YouTube video embedded below provides a basic understanding of this learning target.

  • The process for making a law in GA.

The YouTube videos embedded below provide a basic understanding of this learning target.

February 24th-28th

6 weeks to go! The Milestones testing is coming up. We are starting in earnest to get students ready for state testing which will include a heavy focus on mastering those essential standards from throughout the year. Be ready to work hard all the way past Spring Break :)

This week in 8th grade:

We have begun our Government unit. This week we are writing DBQ essays on the Principles of the U.S. Constitution. Our main focus of these essays is to learn about the significance of Separation of Powers, Checks and Balances, and the Bill of Rights.

Our learning targets this week seek for understanding:

  • The basic structure of the Georgia state constitution.
  • Separation of powers and checks and balances among Georgia's three branches of government.

February 10th-14th

Happy Valentine's Day to our PMMS community. We hope it is a joy-filled day for those in love!

Don't forget, this Friday will be our field trip over to KHS for the opportunity to explore the high school connections' offerings.

We hope all of you enjoy your break next week and return to us well rested on Monday the 24th.

This week in 8th grade:

Our Modern GA unit test is this Tuesday. See last week's entry for the study guide attachment.

Following this test, we will finally move out of the history units and into the government unit. We start by focusing on state/local government and will be learning about the roles and responsibilities our Governor, Lt. Governor, General Assembly, state courts, and citizens all play in governing. First, we will focus on our state Constitution as the foundation of our democratic system in Georgia.

Our learning targets this week seek for understanding:

  • The basic structure of the Georgia state constitution.
  • The rights and responsibilities of citizens.
  • Voting qualifications for elections in GA.
  • The three principles in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Georgia flag.

The YouTube video embedded below provides a basic understanding of this learning target.

February 3rd-7th

Next Friday (on Valentine's Day) the 8th grade will be traveling to Kennesaw Mountain to experience some of the class offerings ahead of class selection. Please make sure your student has turned in the green Field Trip form ASAP.

This week in 8th grade:

Our Unit 5 Test on Modern History will be on Tuesday, February 11th. Start studying soon! The completed study guide is attached below. Don't forget to review the entire YouTube playlist for Modern GA also.
