Growing up I never had the opportunity to wear what I wanted. I always had to wear a tutu, a skirt, bangle bracelets, shiny necklaces, and sparkly earrings. My mom always picked my clothes every single morning. I never knew why exactly she did, but I knew that I always wanted to dress myself.
One day I decided to take it upon myself as the little five year old girl I was, to make my own outfit, and pick out my own clothes. At the age of five, I already wanted to feel independent when it came to my own fashion taste. And nothing was going to stop me from doing that.
So I did, I pulled the dresser drawers and rummaged through the stacks of tutus, and pink clothing. Till I came across this shirt. It was a shirt that had Sesame Street on it, and it was a blue colored shirt. I knew from the start and once I saw the shirt I wanted to wear it.
I loved Sesame Place as a kid and just seeing the shirt with Elmo's face on it made me so happy, I then picked out the most hideous shorts and then wore it with it up with the shirt my mom wanted to be happy with what I was wearing. She stated “blue is for boys, you aren't a boy Paulina.” but, once you're young you can never seem to imagine what that means.
Time has passed by and I have now evolved my fashion taste. Social media and the culture behind it has also definitely affected me into steering my way into a fashion genre that I feel I fit in, and feel most comfortable in.
If you have ever walked around in the city of Philadelphia, you have probably seen a variety of people wearing many different things. Many people were wearing baggy jeans, baggy shirts. Long skirts, short skirts, philly merch And most importantly what they have on their feet. Philly is known for their shoe game, many kids specifically like to wear the newest shoes. It sort of declares a certain status based solely on your shoes.
Walking around the city, it reminds me alot of a smaller version of New York. New York is known all around the world for its popularity of exotect fashion. New York has a big population of people, and that means that every single individual in New York does not have the same exact fashion taste.
The same thing goes for Philadelphia, a lot of people wear different types of clothing based on what they like. The important and main reason for fashion is to be creative, and comfortable with what you wear. Some people like to make a statement and some don't, but that is why different people have different tastes. Fashion is a part of Philly, but most importantly is a part of the whole world.
