In the time of Queen Elizabeth I, a group of Protestants, collectively known as "Puritans," lay their groundwork to cleanse the Anglican Church from old Catholic Rituals (sign of the cross, Catholic liturgical ceremonies, etc.)
A dedicated group from Scrooby, England, started to make a name for themselves, however none of their measures seemed to alter the Anglican Church to their liking - they became Separatists, deeming the Anglican Church too far gone to be purified.
Under King James I, there was a penalty for those who did not attend Anglican parish services. The penalty often included some sort of fine, or more extreme measures like property confiscation or imprisonment. If you defied the Church and King's orders, execution was not out of the question.
Assume you have heard of the stories of Henry Barrow and John Greenwood, two fellow Calvinists who were executed in 1593 for opposing the Anglican Church.
DECISION: You are William Brewster or William Bradford. You and your family are dedicated to the Separatist Movement in Scrooby, but there have been threats made on both you and your possessions if you continue disregarding mandated parish services. You have two options.Â
You stay in Scrooby and start attending the Church of England, as required by law, to protect yourself and your family from harm.
You stay in Scrooby, and maintain your Separatist principles, for which you could possibly face severe penalties.
You travel to the Netherlands, a land where there isn't as much scrutiny on your religious life. However it comes at a cost - it is much more expensive - not just in the moving, but also to live there. Also, some people who live there have very disturbing reputations.
