The Separatists make the decision to travel to the Netherlands to escape possible punishment from James I and the Church of England.
Immediately the Separatists are upset with their life in the Netherlands. Religious tolerance for them also means religious tolerance for all, so they quickly became scared that their children were mingling with people who don't share their values. According to William Bradford, the teenagers in the Netherlands were hell-raisers who were corrupting their Separatist teens.
Also, due to the increase in cost of living, the Separatists spent most of their time working, which they saw as a detriment to their faith. They even were forced to work on the Sabbath.Â
Ultimately, the Separatists needed to search for a new place to go. The Netherlands would not work.
