"Plush" is a song by American rock band Stone Temple Pilots. It was released as the second single from the band's 1992 debut studio album, Core, in August 1993 and became their first single to top the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart.

The song's chord structure was inspired by bassist Robert DeLeo's love of ragtime music, and its lyrics were loosely based on a newspaper article lead singer Scott Weiland had read about a girl who had been found dead after having been kidnapped in the early 1990s. Weiland had also said that the song's lyrics are a metaphor for a failed relationship.[3]

The song was released in 1993 as Core's second single and became a major rock radio hit in the United States, peaking at number one on the Album Rock Tracks and number nine on the Modern Rock Tracks. The song was also one of the first alternative rock songs to reach the number-one spot on the Album Rock Tracks chart during the height of the alternative rock/grunge scene. "Plush" won in the category of "Best Hard Rock Performance" at the 1994 Grammy Awards. The music video also earned the band an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in 1993. "Plush" remains one of the biggest rock hits of the 1990s, and it still receives airplay on radio stations.[citation needed] The song also was voted number 12 on the Australian annual music poll Triple J Hottest 100 in 1993. According to Nielsen Music's year-end report for 2019, "Plush" was the fourth most-played song of the decade on mainstream rock radio with 133,000 spins. All of the songs in the top 10 were from the 1990s.[4]

The award-winning music video, directed by Josh Taft, was released in 1993 and had heavy rotation on MTV. It combines a visual interpretation of the song's lyrics with footage of Weiland singing with the band as a lounge act in an empty bar. There are two different versions of this video, with minor differences. On the Thank You Bonus DVD, the last shot of the video features a woman looking at a mirror image of herself viewing her whole body while the mirror image drifts away. In another version, she is looking at a mirror image of her face, with water (possibly rain) dripping down the reflection of the mirror.[citation needed]

Allow me to clarify a few things before I continue with this incredibly sensitive post. For one, it will mention incredibly sensitive and traumatic topics such as the murder and sexual abuse of a child, and the fact that this case has yet to be resolved. Furthermore, the post is not intended to be a smear against the band or the song itself. After all, the song isn't even directly about the murder or sexual abuse of Karmein Chan. Lastly, this post is just speculation. It is not an allegation, accusation, or intended to be used as part of an investigation.

I just happened to be in the right place and the right time to draw this connection. It was around this time last year that I was driving for my job and got introduced to Stone Temple Pilots because of the radio. As the title of the post suggests, the particular song was Plush.

The second verse of the song is also important here. The line, "And I feel, so much depends on the weather," is about fate itself. The weather is one of many things that are beyond one's control, and it, in of itself, can have consequences ranging from inconvenient to dire. Mr. Cruel's victims were all randomly chosen. This fact extends to Chan. They were not targeted because of any sort of affiliation or interaction. Much like a natural disaster creates victims without warning or discrimination, so did Mr. Cruel. The lyric right afterwards, "So is it rainin' in your bedroom?" continues the disturbing tale. The rapist's first known victim was assaulted in her own bedroom. More figuratively, grief can tie one to their own bed due to the toll it can take on their energy. Rain is not only a metaphor for crying, but the specific location can also be seen as a reference to the mourning that Chan's parents surely had to endure.

This is all likely a reach, but I wanted to share my thoughts and get them out of my head. This whole theory has stuck with me for over a year now. Once again, please bear in mind that I am not accusing STP of anything with this post. I don't think they were making light of such a horrible situation with Plush. As Weiland even stated, the song was not supposed to be about any murder in particular at all. The whole thing is a metaphor to a failed relationship instead.

I've always wondered how the song "Plush" got its name. The lyrics themselves don't contain the word "Plush" nor do the lyrics and music make me think "Plush" is an appropriate song title. So why is the song called "Plush"?

The word 'plush' means 'a rich fabric of silk, cotton, wool', which could possibly be reference to the fact that the song is fairly mellowed-out and easy-going. The lyrics, however, have been explained, and are a metaphor for a failed relationship. The meaning of the title has never been confirmed by Stone Temple Pilots themselves, so it's impossible to get what would be considered a 'true answer'.

...or perhaps, she was his soft spot. Also, when used as an adjective, Plush means "Richly luxurious and expensive". I think he (the subject of the song) saw her (the object of the song) as a luxuriously beautiful 'thing' that was out of his grasp.

I think for any children who love the tune you cannot go wrong with these products. They look like the video, they play the song and they belong to them! As a child, I always had to have the plush or doll of my favourite character at the time!

Does anyone know off hand what key Plush is in, (by Stone Temple Pilots). I think the song starts out with some suspended chords, (I think in G). The main chords are G D F C then some kind of suspended chord that I don't know how to name. I don't have the sheet music, but I am wondering if anyone know what Key that song is in.

excellent question ummmmm ya those next two chords are definitely tricky..... in the way that i play it the first weird chord consists of d# g a# and d, with the d on the B string (some kind of d# maj7??) and then the same thing off of e on the A string......still tryin to figure it out I HAVE NO ANSWER FOR YOU.......just want to say thats been my favorite song for the last year and a half or so.

I saw a TAB of this song recently and was given, I think, the acoustic version of it. The TAB did not fit, but when I tuned the guitar down a half step, or maybe a whole step, the song fit right in with open position chords like D and stuff. Very easy to play.

The reference of dogs in the song can be interpreted as an indication that the person leaving was an object of interest for many people, someone to be hunted or prized. Or maybe her leaving does not negatively affect anyone, and she is now staying alone.
