PAL encourages high school students to explore a career in plumbing

The Plumbing Association of Lakeside (PAL) is encouraging young San Diegans to consider a career in plumbing. Speaking during a career orientation week of a public high school in Lakeside, the PASD highlighted how rewarding a plumbing career could be. “It may not be as glamorous as a job in a corner office, but this job would allow any hardworking plumber to have his own business and work at his own pace. It also opens up other career possibilities and opportunities, plus other higher education that could make a career in the plumbing industry even more rewarding,” says Luke Petersen, President of the PASD

Petersen says there is much to enjoy when it comes to plumbing. “Every day is unique, and every day is a learning experience in solving new challenges. Everything that you have learned from school, from training, and from your experiences are a minefield of information that you would need in doing your daily work,” explains Petersen.

US News mentioned that there is a huge job market for plumbers, and that plumbers will remain in demand for the coming years due to the nature of the profession among other factors.

“All it takes is one lousy morning with no running water (or a clogged sink or phantom-flushing toilet) to remind us how dependent we are on the expertise of plumbers. But troubleshooting is just a sliver of their responsibilities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 15.6 percent employment growth for plumbers between 2016 and 2026. In that period, an estimated 75,200 jobs should open up. Rankings: Plumbers rank #2 in Best Construction Jobs.”

The Pre-Apprenticeship Training Institute meanwhile highlighted the pros and cons of being a plumber. One of the highlights that they discussed is having the opportunity to put up one’s own business.

“See yourself owning your own plumbing business one day? Many plumbing program grads go on to start their own contracting companies. In fact, 18% of Ontario plumbers are self-employed—compared to just 10% of all other occupations. Working for yourself requires extra effort, but it also lifts restrictions on your earning potential. Any profits you make are yours to keep.”

The PASD says a career in plumbing can just be a great decision for anyone open to doing such line of work.
