The PAC on Childproofing Plumbing Fixtures

Plumbing emergencies can happen even in the most cautious and prudent household. This especially holds true when there are children at home who may be curious enough to experiment on plumbing fixtures creating plumbing issues that can only be resolved by expert plumbing contractors.

Speaking in a blog interview, Plumbers’ Association of California Executive Director Benjamin Frost says there are a lot of plumbing concerns that may have been due to a child’s curiosity or playful nature. For instance, toys may have been flushed in the toilet and caused a clog, or the flushing mechanism may have been destroyed due to constant and unnecessary flushing.

To avoid the unnecessary inconvenience, Frost says parents can choose to include in the childproofing of their home, some of the plumbing fixtures that never fails to catch the curiosity of children. “For instance putting a lock on the toilet lid may seem to be a hassle for the adults in the house, but a toy being flushed in the toilet can be even more annoying and inconvenient especially when it causes a clog in the toilet. It will be an embarrassing problem.” Frost warns.

Parenting website Baby Center further explains why toilet lid locks are important in childproofing the bathroom. “Remember to keep the toilet lid down, and install a toilet lock to prevent your baby from lifting the lid. Small children are curious, uncoordinated, and extremely top-heavy. If your baby leans over to peer into the toilet bowl, he could easily lose his balance, fall in headfirst, and drown in as little as an inch of water.”

Hot Water Trouble

Another plumbing fixture that needs to be child proofed is the hot water source. Houzz.com reminded parents how important it is to install a safety device to ensure that children will not get scalded if they suddenly turn on the faucets themselves. International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials

“Lower the hot-water temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature setting on your water heater is warm enough for a comfortable bath or shower but cool enough not to scald a child. If you live in an apartment or condo, you can install an anti-scalding device that shuts off the water when it hits a certain temperature.”

Parenting website The Chill Mom meanwhile shared childproofing tips in the kitchen and bathroom plumbing. One of the areas tackled is the kitchen sink and what is under it. California Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors Association

“The kitchen pipes, the garbage disposal and even the cleaning products stored in the cupboard under the kitchen sink are possible hazards. In order to prevent the toddler to reach under the kitchen sink where the plumbing is located, you can use a multi-purpose strap lock that is easy to install but will only be easy to use by an adult.”
