Plum, Newport
Plum, Newport
Newport plum (Prunus cerasifera 'Newport') is a small deciduous tree that is prized for its ornamental value. It is a cultivar of the cherry plum, which is native to Asia and Europe.
Newport plum typically grows to a height of 15 to 20 feet (4.6 to 6.1 meters) with a spread of 10 to 15 feet (3.0 to 4.6 meters). It has a rounded shape and produces an abundance of showy, fragrant pink flowers in early spring, before the leaves appear. The foliage of the tree is a glossy, dark purple-red and maintains its color throughout the growing season. The fruit of Newport plum is small and purple, but is not typically used for eating.
