If you want superior passive noise isolation and all-day over-ear comfort for long conference calls, choose PLT Poly Blackwire 5220; if you need a lightweight, plug-and-play on-ear solution with dedicated Microsoft Teams buttons, choose Hewlett Poly Blackwire 3320.
• PLT Poly Blackwire 5220: Offers deep, over-the-head comfort with faux leather ear cushions that conform to your ears for extended wear, but its binaural design is slightly bulkier than on-ear alternatives. Best for professionals who spend hours in meetings and prioritize silence from the office hum.
• Hewlett Poly Blackwire 3320: Features a sleek, lightweight on-ear build with integrated SoundGuard technology for echo reduction and a dedicated button for instant Microsoft Teams access, though it lacks the full seal of an over-ear model. Ideal for users who value portability and seamless software integration over maximum physical isolation.
• Both headsets deliver stereo sound with a frequency response spanning 20 Hz to 20 kHz, ensuring clear audio reproduction for voice and media.
• Each unit includes a 7.10 ft cable for ample workspace movement and comes with USB-C/A adapters for versatile connectivity.
The PLT Poly Blackwire 5220 is engineered for the person who treats their headset as a piece of essential daily gear rather than just an accessory. Its defining characteristic is the over-the-head design paired with soft, conforming ear cushions made from faux leather. This isn't just about style; it is a functional choice that creates a seal around the ear. In a busy open office or a noisy home environment, this "sound isolation" feature acts as a passive barrier against distractions. If you are trying to focus during a critical negotiation or simply need to tune out the hum of an air conditioner while working, the 5220's enclosure material and shape do the heavy lifting before you even think about turning up the volume.
This headset is built specifically for endurance. The description highlights an ergonomic design intended for long-lasting comfort, which suggests that the weight distribution and padding are calculated to prevent the fatigue often associated with cheaper on-ear models. For seniors or anyone with sensitive ears, the ability to rest the headphones over the ear rather than pressing them directly onto the ear canal can make a significant difference during eight-hour workdays. The adjustable fit allows you to move locations without losing that secure seal, and the included carrying case makes it easy to fold up and transport, ensuring the device stays protected when not in use.
However, the 5220 is not the right tool for everyone. If your primary workflow involves constantly jumping between devices and you need immediate, one-touch software integration for specific platforms like Microsoft Teams, this model relies more on general compatibility than specialized app buttons. It is a wired solution, so you will be tethered by the 7.10 ft cord, which is generous but still a constraint compared to wireless options. Furthermore, if you prefer a minimalistic look that sits lightly on the ears rather than encompassing them, the binaural, over-the-head form factor might feel too substantial for your taste. It is a powerhouse for focused, stationary work where comfort and isolation are non-negotiable.

The Hewlett Poly Blackwire 3320 is designed for the user who values simplicity, speed, and active audio management. Its on-ear design places the drivers directly on the ear rather than around them, creating a lighter profile that feels less intrusive. This model shines in environments where you need to stay connected to your digital ecosystem without fumbling with settings. The inclusion of Microsoft Teams certification is a major differentiator here; it means there is a dedicated button for seamless integration, allowing you to mute, answer calls, or manage audio with a single press. For anyone living in a Teams-centric workplace, this hardware-level shortcut removes friction from the communication process.
Comfort in the 3320 is achieved through a different philosophy than the 5220. Instead of sealing the ear off, it uses padded headbands and an adjustable fit to sit comfortably on top of the ear. This approach keeps the ears cooler and reduces the feeling of being "boxed in," which some users find preferable for shorter bursts of activity or for those who wear glasses and find over-ear cups uncomfortable. The SoundGuard technology adds another layer of utility, actively managing noise reduction and echo reduction. This is crucial for clearing up muddy conversations in echoey rooms, ensuring that your voice sounds professional even if the room acoustics are poor. It is a robust, reliable choice for the hybrid worker who moves between home offices and co-working spaces.
That said, the 3320 trades away the passive noise cancellation benefits of a full over-ear seal. Because it is an on-ear model, you will hear more of your surroundings than you would with the 5220. If your goal is total immersion or complete silence from external chatter, the 3320's open design might let too much ambient noise bleed in. Additionally, while the 7.10 ft cable provides flexibility, the lack of a protective carrying case (unlike the 5220) means you may need to handle the unit more carefully when transporting it. It is an excellent value for those who prioritize software ease-of-use and a lightweight feel over maximum environmental isolation.
• Best for battery life and passive isolation → PLT Poly Blackwire 5220 (Its over-ear design blocks more ambient noise physically).
• Best for Microsoft Teams integration → Hewlett Poly Blackwire 3320 (Features a dedicated button for seamless platform control).
• Best for all-day wearing comfort → PLT Poly Blackwire 5220 (Conforming faux leather cushions reduce pressure points better than on-ear pads).
• Best for lightweight portability → Hewlett Poly Blackwire 3320 (On-ear design is generally less bulky and easier to slip on quickly).
• Best for echo reduction in noisy rooms → Hewlett Poly Blackwire 3320 (SoundGuard technology actively manages audio clarity).
• Best for travel protection → PLT Poly Blackwire 5220 (Comes with a protective carrying case for folding and storage).
• Best for users with sensitive ears → PLT Poly Blackwire 5220 (Over-the-head placement avoids direct pressure on the ear canal).
• Best for simple plug-and-play setups → Both offer equal 7.10 ft cable lengths and universal connectivity, but the 3320 offers quicker software setup via Teams certification.
After analyzing the specifications and design philosophies of both units, I would buy the PLT Poly Blackwire 5220 for my own daily needs. The decision comes down to the fundamental requirement of long-duration comfort. While the Hewlett Poly Blackwire 3320 offers excellent software features, the physical design of the 5220—specifically the over-ear fit and soft, conforming cushions—addresses the most common complaint among heavy headset users: ear fatigue. For seniors or anyone spending six hours or more on calls, the passive isolation provided by the 5220's enclosure is worth more than the convenience of a single Teams button. The 5220 feels like a tool built to last through the grind, whereas the 3320 feels like a gadget built for quick tasks. If you are looking for the best on-ear headphones for seniors who need relief from constant pressure, the 5220's over-ear architecture is the safer, more humane choice.
Yes, both the PLT Poly Blackwire 5220 and Hewlett Poly Blackwire 3320 come with USB-C/A adapters and a standard 3.5 mm jack, making them compatible with a wide range of devices including older desktops and laptops that rely on traditional ports.
The PLT Poly Blackwire 5220 is superior for blocking out background noise because its over-ear design with faux leather cushions provides a tighter seal and higher passive noise isolation compared to the on-ear design of the 3320.
Both models feature padded ear cushions designed for comfort; the 5220 uses soft, conforming cushions that adapt to the ear shape, while the 3320 utilizes a padded headband and on-ear pads for a lighter fit.
Yes, both headsets feature a 7.10 ft cable, which provides ample reach and flexibility for comfortable movement within a typical workspace or home office without needing to stand up or strain.
